JOB DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL BUS DRIVERRANGE 11

DEFINITIONUnder supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation operates a school bus or transportation vehicle over designated routes within an established time schedule; transports students or school employees to and from school and on special event trips; performs daily inspections of a bus or transportation equipment; performs other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS• Drives a school bus or transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule.• Assists in evaluating transportation routes, and reports unsafe road conditions.• Transports children to and from school in a safe manner.• Loads and unloads students safely at designated stops and on study trips.• Plans, organizes and implements students safety and pupil transportation vehicle evacuation drills.• Maintains bus or transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition (inside and outside), and inspects and reports any mechanical defects or malfunctions.• Adheres to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.• Responds to public contacts concerning transportation problems and concerns.• Completes the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.• May transport children with special learning needs and physical handicaps (with appropriate training).• Administers first aid as required, and contacts appropriate administrators in case of serious injury or illness.• Makes daily inspections and fuels bus as needed.• Transports students and adults to and from field trips.• Keeps a record of routine maintenance and requests repairs as needed. Submits daily report of condition of bus, makes other reports as required.• Escorts students across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.• Maintains accurate student roster.• Maintains all required licenses and certificates.• Completes Pupil Surveys as directed.• Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:• Safe driving practices and techniques;• Basic first aid procedures and methods;• Safety and maintenance requirements of bus and other pupil transportation equipment;• Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and Title 13 applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.

Ability to:• Drive a school bus and other transportation equipment safely and efficiently;• Maintain appropriate student behavior on a school bus or other transportation equipment;• Perform appropriately in situations requiring tact and diplomacy;• Understand and carry out oral and written directions;• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships;• Read and interpret maps, education and vehicle codes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 20 to 40 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.• This type of work involves operating a student transportation vehicle (often on rough surface), sitting during much of the assignment, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.• Sufficient mobility to climb in and out of school buses and emergency exits and to maneuver students into and out of buses.• Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced (including installing snow chains when required).• This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:Experience:• Prior work experience driving a school bus with no chargeable accidents in the last three (3) years (Title 13, California Administrative Code), or the completion of a school bus driver training program.• Ability to read and interpret maps, education and vehicle codes.Education:• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License and Certificate Requirements:• Possession of a valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.• Possession of a California School Bus Driver's Certificate.• Possession of a First Aid Certificate or Passage of the California Highway Patrol First Aid Test.• Possession of a CPR card.• Possession of a Medical Certificated (Form DL 51 and DL 51A).

Condition of Employment• Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.

SALARY:$22.47 - $32.95 per/hr Range K(Includes vacation factor)182 workdays(14 District paid holidays)

License and Certificate Requirements:- Possession of a valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator's License.- Possession of a Valid California School Bus Driver's Certificate.- Possession of a First Aid Certificate or Passage of the California Highway Patrol First Aid Test.- Possession of a valid CPR card.- Possession of a Medical Certificated (Form DL 51).
