JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Respiratory Clinical Manager, the Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician (CRTT) will perform all the duties of a Respiratory Technician; i.e., aerosol therapy, I ABG's, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, resuscitations, overnight oximetry, In addition, will participate in continuing education and department programs as required, i.e., orientation of new employees.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs, but is not limited to, all the following respiratory procedures: aerosol therapy, ABG's, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, overnight oximetry, resuscitations; adult and neonatal.

Clinical assessment on all patients on respiratory services with appropriate recommendations to attending or ordering physicians.

Actively participates in department inservice educational programs.

Flexible and willing to rotate shifts or work odd schedules as needed.

Orients new employees and/or students to department as requested.

Participates in department projects and programs as requested.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:An active member in good standing with the AARC.Ability to function effectively under stress, prioritize workload and make appropriate decisions.Ability to communicate well with physicians, hospital staff, patients and the general public.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.Ability to maintain a level of professional confidentiality.QALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR certification or equivalent within 3 months of hire required.Currently licensed in the state of Connecticut required.Certificate of Respiratory Therapy required, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by NBRC preferred.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Reads prescription, draws arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatments such as type and duration of therapy and medication and dosages.

2.Determines most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with physician's orders.

3.Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.

4.Operates equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment such as volume, gas concentration, humidity and temperature and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients.

5.Monitors patient's physiological response to therapy such as vital signs, arterial blood gases and blood chemistry changes.

6.Performs bronchial pulmonary drainage and assists patients performing breathing exercises.

7.Observes equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.

8.Consults with physician and/or charge nurse in event of adverse patient reactions.

9.Maintains patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information.

10.Inspects and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.

11.Demonstrates respiratory care procedure to trainees and other health care personnel.

12.Processes all non-disposable respiratory equipment for cleaning using appropriate sanitary and infection control procedures.

13.Practices Standard Precautions as appropriate.

14.Understands technical information given from supervisors, charts, reference books, manuals and labels.

15.Uses hands, eyes and fingers with skill.

16.Ability to change from one duty to another frequently.

17.Records information accurately.

18.Performs a wide variety of cardiopulmonary assignments with called upon to do so, i.e., PFTs, EKGs.

19.Demonstrates competency in utilizing resources to accommodate cultural needs of patients and customers such as dietary, religious and language needs.

20.Demonstrates efforts to maintain and improve job specific competencies. Incorporates new knowledge into practice.

21.Participates in performance improvement activities.

22.Remains flexible in work schedule in order to provide the most effective and efficient support for the department and hospital mission.

23.Demonstrates knowledge of all department and hospital policies relevant to the performance of their responsibilities.

24.Must be trained and subsequently show competence in responding to events where a patient is out of control or exhibiting inappropriate behavior.

25.Must be able to maintain confidentiality in a professional manner.
