Sr. Manufacturing Engineer, Electrode Calendering & Lamination

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer to create manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting-edge battery products. Battery development is at the heart of our company, and this is an exciting opportunity work directly the central challenge with electric vehicles - battery cost. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work with a highly motivated team on extremely challenging projects. In addition to developing manufacturing equipment and processes, Manufacturing Engineers work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product lifecycle. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, and Production to take battery design changes and new battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.Responsibilities Drive ramp of new production lines by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system and driving actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availabilityDesign and develop the manufacturing processes and equipment to ensure that methodologies comply with applicable standards, company policy, and all health and safety laws, acts, regulations and codesGenerate and maintain documentation including machine and process specifications, drawings, BOMs, spare parts, PFMEAs, control plans, and process flow chartsDevelop manufacturing metrics and key performance indices and implement metrology to measure all critical quality and safety related process itemsDesign the layout of production workstations for product flow, ergonomics, and efficiencyDrive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and develop specifications for custom automation equipmentClosely collaborate with and manage external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment development from development through buyoffValidate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementationGenerate machine qualification checklists and manage the install, commissioning, and start-up of new equipment while balancing speed and safetyCreate manufacturing introduction and deliver training to Operations and Maintenance Technicians to ensure and seamless handover of new equipment Requirements Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience5+ years of hands-on experience in manufacturing engineering (10+ years of experience preferred)Experience developing manufacturing processes from prototype to mass productionExperience developing automated manufacturing equipment, including fixturing and tooling in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred, Catia is also a plus)Experience drawing machine or production line layouts in 2D CAD (AutoCAD preferred)Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment (APQP is a plus)Extensive project management experienceExcellent communication skills, both verbal and writtenAbility and willingness to travel domestically and internationallyExperience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas is highly desired: roll to roll polymer extrusion, winding/rewinding, calendering/pressing, lamination, web handling, stamping, steel rolling/milling, airplane/rocket engine hydraulics, mechanics, battery manufacturing (li-ion, electrode, cathode, anode or other similar chemistries) Compensation and Benefits BenefitsAlong with competitive pay, as a full-time Tesla employee, you are eligible for the following benefits at day 1 of hire: Aetna PPO and HSA plans > 2 medical plan options with $0 payroll deduction Family-building, fertility, adoption and surrogacy benefits Dental (including orthodontic coverage) and vision plans, both have options with a $0 paycheck contribution Company Paid (Health Savings Account) HSA Contribution when enrolled in the High Deductible Aetna medical plan with HSA Healthcare and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) LGBTQ+ care concierge services 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, and other financial benefits Company paid Basic Life, AD&D, short-term and long-term disability insurance Employee Assistance Program Sick and Vacation time (Flex time for salary positions), and Paid Holidays Back-up childcare and parenting support resources Voluntary benefits to include: critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, theft & legal services, and pet insurance Weight Loss and Tobacco Cessation Programs Tesla Babies program Commuter benefits Employee discounts and perks program Expected Compensation$80,000 - $198,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefitsPay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
