Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Manufacturing Development Engineer to create, develop and scale up manufacturing processes for our cutting-edge Tesla battery cell manufacturing line. This role will invent, develop, scale up and optimize battery manufacturing processes within a cross-functional engineering team responsible for the development lifecycle and launch into manufacturing. In this role, you will work closely with many organizations both internal and external to Tesla taking new battery designs from initial concept through into full production. The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. Responsibilities Drive development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost Be a leader in technical discussions with internal and external teams, and define process and equipment development roadmap for Cell manufacturing processes - Roll-to-roll, web handling, continuous motion, laser processesDesign process equipment and peripherals from concept to final release to enable improvements to our production and safetyWork with internal shops and external vendors to procure and produce high quality hardware on tight timelinesAssemble, install, integrate, and fully commission systems through acceptance testingPerform safety and failure mode analysis on designs to ensure we meet the highest standardsPlan and Execute DoEs to characterize boundary conditions and optimize process for manufacturability and qualityDevelop and manage PFMEA, DFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in placeLead transfer of technologies to other Gigafactories globally Requirements Degree or relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical EngineeringExperience with roll-to-roll or winding manufacturing processes and applications is preferred 5+ years relevant experience in interdisciplinary/integrated engineering, process development, manufacturing engineering, or 3+ years in Battery R&D and Manufacturing in a commercial lithium-ion environmentIn-depth understanding and knowledge of lithium-ion battery technology including material selection, fabrication, and synthesis; new battery cell design, assembly, testing, and failure mode analysis.
