Purpose and role of job:
The Cost Accountant is responsible for developing, setting, and analyzing cost standards within a business. They gather and study data related to raw material purchases, inventory, labor, and overhead, and provide management with concise summary reports. The Cost Accountant analyzes the impact of changes in product design, manufacturing methods, or services on costs. They also perform financial tasks such as maintaining bill of materials accuracy, preparing quotes for new items, and ensuring the accuracy of the fixed asset system. Additionally, the Cost Accountant supports decision-making by providing cost analysis and support to operations and other staff members, and assists with month-end close and external audits.
Principal Accountabilities/ Responsibilities:Processing and ensuring all month end, and year end transactions are properly recorded in the accounting systemDeveloping, setting and analyzing cost standards.Prepares quotes for new items or changes to existing items.Administers the schedule of cycle counts, and the process of booking adjustments and analyzing variances.Responsible for tracking and communicating slow moving and obsolete inventory.Works with Business Development and Customer Service to ensure price lists are correct and updated as needed.Responsible for month end close including journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations.Provides ad hoc cost analysis and decision-making support to Operations and other staff members.Participation in the Annual Independent External Audit.Performs other duties as assigned.Education and experience requirements:
Strong knowledge and experience in Excel, Access, ERP systems (JD Edwards a plus)Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent experience or combination.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals.Ability to maintain confidentiality, use time efficiently and strong attention to detail.Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
