Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks an Assistant Controller of Billing and Revenue to join the Finance Unit.BDS is a public defense office representing low-income New Yorkers in criminal, family, immigration, and civil legal matters. Our work with clients is focused on the intersection of the legal systems that disproportionately impact Black and Brown people living below the poverty level in Brooklyn.BDS represents thousands of people each year who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted legal needs. In addition to a zealous legal defense, our interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers and advocates provide a wide range of legal and advocacy services, including housing, public benefits, education, and employment issues.Under the general supervision of the Associate CFO, the Assistant Controller of Billing and Revenue is responsible for overseeing, managing, and preparing all claims, budgets, and other contract-based documents.Responsibilities+ Supervise the Billing/Revenue Unit within the Finance Unit.+ Oversee and prepare contract documents for State, City and Federal funding sources.+ Oversee and submit required claims and reports per contract requirements.+ Assist with Requests for Proposals.+ Review and create budget modifications.+ Review and prepare AR schedules (AR balances, payments, reconciliations, etc.).+ Review and prepare monthly expense reports to ensure alignment of actual expenses with budgets.+ Work closely with the Associate CFO, finance and program personnel, and funding sources to ensure maximum contract reimbursement and to avoid overspending.+ Assist in the preparation of the internal annual budgets.+ Interact with both internal and external auditors by providing the required documentation and ensuring that the proper information is maintained.+ Additional duties as assigned.Qualifications+ BS/BA in Finance/ Accounting or relevant field. MBA or professional certification is a plus.+ A minimum of 5-years experience in the non-profit sector, preferably in the social services industry in contracts management, accounting, budgeting, or other related areas. This experience must include at least 3 years at a supervisory or managerial level.+ Ability to lead the Billing/ Revenue team and work cooperatively with other units within BDS.+ Ability to review and understand contract verbiage.+ Expert knowledge of budgets and budget terms.+ Advanced knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).+ Knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting).+ Experience with city/ state/ federal contracts.+ Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.+ Organized, detail- oriented, and able to meet stringent deadlines.+ Self-driven with eagerness to exceed expectations and achieve success.+ Advanced skills with Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.) and proficiency with accounting software.+ Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.+ Ability to understand and adhere to all corporate compliance and other regulatory requirements governing the functions of the position.Position Information?This is an exempt, salaried position. The normal schedule is Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. The position is based at BDSs offices and the courts located in Downtown Brooklyn. Finance staff are working a hybrid schedule of 2 days per week in-office and 3 days of remote work. However, applicants should be prepared to increase in-person days in the event policies or needs change.BDS determines salary on a pay scale based on education and experience. For this position, there is a base salary range of $100,000-$115,000 depending on the applicants education and experience.
