Role Description
As a key member of the Hospital Management Team, the Nursing Care Manager provides leadership for the Hospital nursing team to ensure development and growth of nursing staff and ensure high quality service to patients and clients. This management position is responsible for enhancing interaction and cooperation between veterinarians, technicians and support staff, in the examination, hospitalization, care and treatment of animal patients, along with expediting communication and client education to the guardians and caretakers of our animal patients.
Core Responsibilities
Leadership - Vision and Standards for Quality of Care
Uphold and help establish vision for standards of care in partnership with doctors, Hospital Clinical Administrator and Nursing SupervisorsOversee the Nursing Supervisors and all aspects of the nursing staff (RVTs and Veterinary Assistants), including on-the-floor supervision, coaching and assistance (when needed)Provide back-up to the supervisors, fill-in or work with them on the floor as neededImplement protocols relating to nursing care procedures, and partner with Hospital Clinical Administrator in development of those protocols.Maintain and improve nursing care work systems, documents, and processesImplement roadmap for ongoing nursing care improvement initiativesWork cooperatively with other SPCA Departments to meet business/program needsParticipate in strategic planning, goal setting and implementation of the organization's vision mapImplement long-term vision and plan for nursing care team that aligns with Hospital growth and strategic plan
Leadership - People & Talent ManagementLead, in partnership with Hospital Clinical Administrator, the hiring, onboarding, and training of Nursing Supervisors.Provide leadership, regular check in's, supervision and coaching for the nursing supervisors; sustain a strong commitment to advancing the organization's mission and work, teamwork, high professional standards, and continuing developmentPartner with Hospital Clinical Administrator and Supervisors to hire and onboard Hospital RVTs and Veterinary Assistants.Create with Hospital Clinical Administrator, implement and maintain a formal training program for RVTs and Veterinary AssistantsPartner with Hospital Clinical Administrator to develop in-house CE training program for nursing staff as well as to track outside CE pursued by staffProvide staff development through teaching, mentoring and training. Implement recruiting and retention pipeliningConduct regular staff meetings and keep team updated regarding announcements, policies, and protocols
Leadership - OrganizationAct as a liaison between departments and maintain effective communication with various Hospital team managers through scheduled meetings, informally or in writing as needed to coordinate functions of the HospitalParticipate and contribute in intra and inter departmental meetings.Lead cross-functional teams to develop, pilot and implement performance improvement initiatives across the Hospital; Measure and evaluate results, collaborate with Hospital leadership to implement permanent changesWork closely with the Hospital Medical Director to schedule RVT and Veterinary Assistant staff providing appropriate coverage for the Hospital Department.
Leadership - OperationsWork cooperatively with the Hospital Business Administrator and others to develop protocols and training for nursing care staff to maintain and enhance patient data in an accurate manner in appropriate databases and filesSet standards and direct nursing care supervisors in the maintenance and upgrading of work unit training and operations manuals that relate to nursing careWork cooperatively with the Purchasing team managing inventory and ordering supplies.Ensure accurate payroll reportingCollaborate with Hospital Clinical Administrator and Director of Hospital Services on budget developmentRequirements
RVT in good standingBachelor's degree required, major in business administration or related area preferred but not required, Master's degree preferred but not requiredA minimum of 3 years leading a nursing team in a high-volume, high-responsibility medical environmentCommitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCADemonstrated success in managing a diverse team of professionals; skilled in managing varied relationships and successful at facilitating collaboration and cooperationKnowledge of principles and practices of staff management and the appropriate methods and means of dealing with human behavior situations in a variety of business circumstancesAbility to delegate responsibility, achieve and measure results with team membersAbility to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing in a diverse range of audiences and settings; ability to mediate conflicts and give/receive feedbackExperience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral animalsAbility to understand and communicate pertinent medical information with colleagues and clientsHighly proficient with MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and DatabasesSelf-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasksBilingual in Spanish, Cantonese and/or Mandarin is highly preferredComfortable working in the shelter/veterinary environment and willing to accommodate animals in the workplaceSalary & Benefits
The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $105,000 - $115,000.
