Advanced Practice Provider - Neuro Oncology

Neuro-Oncology provides state-of-the-art treatment for patients with cancers of the brain and nervous system. Physicians in the department also provide expert care for patients that endure neurologic complications from cancer or cancer therapies.

The Neuro-Oncology team participates in a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care - neurologists treat central and peripheral nervous system conditions that may affect cancer patients, while neuropsychologists diagnose and treat cognitive and behavioral effects of cancer, or help patients learn ways to minimize cancer's impact on their quality of life.

The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Provider position is to conduct comprehensive health assessments, identify normal/abnormal health characteristics, develop treatment plans, initiate appropriate care, perform delegated functions under the supervision of the physician and continuously evaluate care outcomes.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients through interview, health history, physical examination, diagnostic studies and documents/dictates the progress notes, care plans, and discharge summaries.

Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems, writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols, limited prescriptive authority and institutional guidelines.

Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the client.

Performs diagnostic procedures to include lumbar puncture, lumbar puncture with chemotherapy instillation, ommaya tap, ommaya tap with chemotherapy instillation or ommaya tap for indium DTPA instillation and obtains specimen ( such as CSF) as indicated.

Conducts or participates in inpatient rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients in the Neuro- oncology service or Cancer Neurology service. (Applicable to inpatient assignment)

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.

EXPERIENCE

Preferred:

At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.

Prior Neurology or Neurosurgery experience.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required:

Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Preferred:

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
