This exciting job opportunity is for a Textile Application Development Scientist in the Fibers Technology Division of the Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, TN. This position is specifically focused on developing new applications and relevant value propositions for Eastman Naia cellulosic fiber and the sustainability of Eastman’s fibers portfolio. The successful applicant will work closely with Marketing to identify applications which are suitable for Naia yarns and staple fibers, based on known value propositions, as well as uncovering new value propositions in new and existing applications. Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of textile production processes, textile dyeing and finishing, fabric constructions, textile testing, sustainability certifications for textiles, and sustainable trends in textile production. Candidates should also be able to communicate effectively and function in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
Responsibilities
Develop a deep understanding of the functional attributes of Eastman Naia yarns and fibers.
Apply chemistry and polymer knowledge to measured properties or observed processing of yarns and fibers.
Identify needs and opportunities through discussion with customers, sales and marketing personnel with the ability to translate those needs into innovative product solutions.
Propose a course of action based on data analysis.
Lead multidisciplinary application development project teams.
Leverage understanding of textile technology to drive mills to new fabric developments with Naia.
Support sustainability through knowledge of certifications and insights into and application of sustainable textile production techniques to Naia.
Qualifications
B.S. in textile discipline, materials science or related field required; other B.S. disciplines considered with 10+ years of experience in the textiles or materials science industries
M.S. or Ph.D. in textile discipline, materials science or related field preferred
Minimum 5 years of experience in textile industry preferred
Passion for sustainable textile materials and processes
Ability to lead projects involving external parties and internal stakeholders
Preferred general understanding of fashion/textile industry and the state of textile technology:
Key players in value chain
Fiber, yarn and fabric properties
Fabric constructions
Common fabric testing methods and equipment
Commercial scale knitting and weaving
Commercial scale wet processing - dyeing and finishing
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Strong bias for action and willingness to take on relatively undefined challenges
Solid working knowledge of MS office for data analysis, presentation and report writing
