DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe IT Lead - Applications (Computer-Aided Dispatch Support) will oversee the maintenance and support of essential systems for the Houston Emergency Center, such as the emergency dispatching system and its connections to the Houston Police and Fire Departments' record systems, mobile data computers, and other related business systems. This role involves managing large, complex, and highly reliable systems, ensuring they run smoothly and without interruption. The IT Lead will also manage a team that creates reports, custom applications, and supports the deployment of public safety systems. Additionally, they will evaluate and integrate new technologies, like Next Generation 911 systems, as needed.
While experience in public safety is preferred, candidates with a strong background in leading application teams can also succeed in this role with the help of city-provided training and support.
WORKING CONDITIONSThis position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort in a normal office environment.
Extended work hours may be required due to situational emergencies, such as critical systems failures or extended installation times. If designated TIER 1, the successful candidate may be required to stay at the Emergency Center during major events, such as severe storms.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATIONRequires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field. Information systems-specific technical certifications may be substituted for 1 year of either the education or the experience requirement, as applicable. Related professional Information Systems experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
EXPERIENCEAt least six (6) years of technology experience supporting applications. A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field may be substituted for two years of the experience requirement.
LICENSEMust be able to obtain CJIS Certification.
PREFERENCES**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **Experience working in a Public Safety Environment or large call center.
