July 22, 2023 .The Department of Data Science at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position that will begin September 25, 2023. We seek an individual with expertise in experimental medium energy nuclear physics, data science, and machine learning. The selected candidate will be responsible for creating an Artificial Intelligence-enabled framework aimed at optimizing an integrated detector design. They will apply this framework to the Electron Ion Collider, making use of advanced data science techniques and multi-objective optimization methods for comprehensive analysis. The initial appointment is funded for two years, and the appointment may be extended pending funding and performance. Our group is integrating AI/ML into the design optimization of complex detectors and new materials, which will be the primary focus of the new hire. The group is also largely involved in developing new AI/ML-based solutions for near real-time analysis in streaming readout and in self-driven experiments with controlled photon beam. At W&M, the Data Science Program is deeply involved in educational activities that help disseminate AI/ML, and we actively collaborate with the EIC community and with AI4EIC ( https://eic.ai ). William & Mary hosted in 2022 the AI4EIC workshop and contributed to organizing the first international hackathon of AI4EIC. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate in similar educational activities.
