About the Department of Research and Analysis
The Manager of Transit Analytics works in MARTA’s Department of Research and Analysis. The mission of the department is to turn data into information to help MARTA make better business decisions, supporting a culture of transparency, accountability, and performance management. About the Position
This is an exceptional opportunity for a results-driven and self-motivated individual who has a strong background in data analytics and experience motivating a team to help MARTA as it looks ahead to serving the region for the next 45 years. The Manager of Transit Analytics serves as the lead analyst in the Transit Analytics Unit in the Department of Research and Analysis, actively managing and mentoring a team of four analysts employing a wide variety of data, tools, and analytics to generate actionable business intelligence that helps MARTA improve its performance and the customer experience. The Manager of Transit Analytics has the intellectual curiosity, independence, creativity, and drive to dive deeply into the data and uncover and tell the story behind the numbers by appropriately framing questions, developing corresponding data sets, testing hypotheses, explaining how the results relate to the business, and driving next steps. They are skilled at using SQL or other tools to extract and transform data from MARTA’s Data Warehouse, preparing and analyzing the data using statistical models in Excel, R, or Python, and visualizing and communicating the results using Power BI or similar software. Examples of this work include identifying and quantifying the factors impacting the on-time performance of MARTA’s vehicles, understanding past trends and forecasting future ridership, explaining changes in fare revenue collection, and understanding who uses MARTA's service and how and why they use it. The Manager of Transit Analytics is also responsible for the timely and accurate submission of MARTA’s service statistics to the National Transit Database, ensuring compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements. The Manager of Transit Analytics may conduct special studies, participate in cross-disciplinary working groups, respond to information requests, and perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related highly quantitative field with training in statistical modeling. At least six (6) years of experience in data analysis and applied or theoretical research and three (3) years supervisory, management or project management experience required. A master’s degree is highly preferred.
Demonstrated experience with the following is required: academic/industry research methods; writing code (using, e.g., Python, R, SQL, Visual Basic) to process and analyze data; using ArcGIS to produce maps and perform spatial analyses; using statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, R, Minitab) to analyze data with an advanced knowledge of survey statistics and statistical methods such as Bayesian models, machine learning, and clustering methods; using data visualization and data blending software (e.g., Power BI, Tableau); and project management. Directly related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis in-lieu of educational requirement.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages Senior Performance Analysts, Performance Analysts, and/or interns. May serve as Director in an “acting” capacity when needed.
