Primary Purpose

Operates heavy-duty trucks for the transportation of equipment, construction materials or refuse. Maintain safe and efficient operation of solid waste collection and transport equipment and vehicles.Essential Job Functions

Inspects trucks and equipment prior to and during operation; performs minor maintenance of equipment including cleaning and washing, flat and equipment repair; performs brake inspections and adjustments; completes and maintains daily logs; prepares reports as needed and reports any irregularities or malfunctions to supervisor.Transports refuse from transfer station to landfill; operates scraper to haul dirt to cover refuse; operates refuse compactor; operates grader to maintain roads in and surrounding landfill; operates dozer to dig and cover as needed.Weighs commercial and non-commercial vehicles using landfill and maintains records of activity.Ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices; maintains radio communication with supervisors, caretakers and other truck drivers.Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of facilities to include litter, snow and dirt removal; Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner and resolves questions and complaints in an efficient and timely manner.Performs other duties as directed or assigned.Knowledge/Skills:

Working knowledge of truck operating systems; and of minor vehicle maintenance and repair.Skill in using heavy equipment and hand, air and power tools.Ability to operate a variety of vehicles including auto side loader, rear and front-end loaders, backhoe, wheeled loader, and forklift and other solid waste vehicles.Ability to operate a two-way radio.Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions; to maintain logs and prepare reports; and to perform basic arithmetical computations.Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of formal training and experience in truck driving totaling 1 year.Possession of a valid New Mexico Class A or B driver's license.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions :

Work is performed outdoors in varied weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, allergens, and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near hazardous/moving materials, equipment and machinery; exposure to excessive noise; and working with hostile and/or offensive individuals. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required. Work requires the ability to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Work schedule may include evening, weekend and holiday hours. Will be subject to random drug screening.

Conditions of Employment:

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver's License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Candidate must obtain and/or maintain all certifications required.
