ResponsibilitiesThe Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for managing all non-income tax functions including, but not limited to, sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, plastic bag fees, and unclaimed property. The Indirect Tax Manager oversees state and local and international audits and related notices. In addition, the Indirect Tax Manager manages outside tax compliance and consulting firms and internal business partners and performs tax planning and special projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the filing of sales and use tax, property tax, plastic bag fees, and unclaimed property returns in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and VAT for international eCommerce transactions. In addition, supervise and review the business license renewals.
Oversee non-income tax audits conducted by state and local governments. Respond to all information requests received from taxing authorities.
Assess and review tax reserves in compliance with ASC 450 (FAS 5) to ensure accurate financial reporting.
Lead implementation and maintenance of indirect tax software and technology tools, including oversight of automation tools.
Identify savings, planning, and process improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
Ensure execution of all non-income tax controls and update as improvement opportunities are identified.
Assist with the forecast of non-income tax liabilities and manage the non-income tax budget.
Oversee third party vendors responsible for non-income tax compliance.
Manage all non-income tax accruals and reconcile tax filings to general ledger.
Assist field personnel, vendors and customers with non-income tax inquiries.
Monitor and evaluate impact of non-income tax law changes and report to management.
Perform special tax projects on as needed basis
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of 7 - 10 years of indirect tax experience in public accounting or in a large corporate tax department
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance or equivalent experience
Broad exposure to state and local taxation
Ability to monitor legislative, regulatory and judicial developments
Vertex and Avalara experience a plus
Retail experience a plus
Advanced knowledge and technical expertise in Microsoft Excel
CRITICAL SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
Possess solid project management and organizational skills with proven ability to lead projects and teams with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
Must have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and ability to translate complex tax matters to Finance leadership/cross-functional partners
Ability to plan, organize and manage a high-volume workload to meet deadlines
Ability to motivate and manage others to effectively meet deadlines
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts
