This position preserves public safety by providing support for the safe operations, through the Office of the Director of Prisons, of all South Dakota Department of Correctional facilities. Designs, develops, and applies principles of strategic planning to ensure compliance with operational standards while achieving program goals relative to budget, human resources, and the application of other taxpayer assets. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, legal actions and orders which requires strong, inter-agency working relationships with state agencies, federal, state, county, local, private and military law enforcement authorities; fulfill requirements of legal actions and life safety; progressively collaborate with internal and external constituents, legislative officials, governmental and non-governmental agencies.
Position provides leadership support and oversight to correctional facilities, offender services, faith and citizens program and emergency management to ensure safe, secure and humane operations of all institutions, upholding public safety and successful reentry of offenders. This position provides supervision for Wardens in assisting with achieving their statutory authority in the operations of his or her facility. Collaborates with other divisions and the Director of Prisons to enhance Corrections programs in order to keep SDDOC in the forefront of progress in corrections.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
experience leading a correctional facility or system;experience implementing corrections best practices;experience developing and implementing correctional policies and procedures across multiple programs within a facility or correctional system.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
demonstrates expertise and skills in team building, organizational and institutional management;a proven track record of managing staff, finances a complex organization in a manner that is progressive, consistent and efficient;knowledge and understanding of public policy and government leadership;excellent, articulate, and persuasive interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to deliver South Dakota Department of Corrections vision and compel a variety of audiences;initiative and sound judgment in decision-making, in interpreting and applying policies and governmental regulations, in delegating responsibilities and in planning and analyzing programs while mentoring subordinate staff;able to lead and inspire others on behalf of the SDDOC;senior level management experience within a correctional environment;excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and public speaking skills;excellent negotiation and consensus building skills;ability to understand, develop, and implement performance and outcome measures, managing effective operations while ensuring performance measures are met;proven ability to provide analytical expertise in strategic planning, operational effectiveness and progressive evaluation of measurements;ability to implement and improve operations through effective leadership and the use of performance measures;accomplished in the use of modern technology and media to strengthen performance and communication.
