The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a rapidly growing and highly successful nonprofit whose mission is to accelerate cures through stem cell research. Under the supervision of the NYSCF Facilities Director, NYSCF is seeking a Part Time Mechanic/Facilities Assistant to conduct maintenance and general facilities operational work. This person will perform the duties particular to, and normally required of a mechanic, following recognized procedures and techniques for repairing, replacing, troubleshooting, and installing mechanical systems in the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building/facility trades at our state of the art facility located on NYC’s West side.

WORK SCHEDULE:

15-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday during the hours of 8:00 am-5:00 pm.

Schedule during working hours is flexible.

TASKS AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform and record routine maintenance, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs as required by work orders and/or verbal requests in the general maintenance areas of carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, masonry and electrical trades. Includes data entry.

Electrical work installing equipment, wiring power cords, fixing appliances.

Performs maintenance painting, including minor surface preparation.

Changing air and water filters and light plumbing.

Light fabrication.

Coordinate Facility supply stock/preparation work as needed.

Maintains, adjusts, and repairs machinery and mechanical equipment in accordance with diagrams, sketches, operating manuals, manufacturers’ specifications, preventive maintenance schedules, and/or Facility Director’s instructions.

Dissembles/assembles machines, equipment, or furniture for servicing, repair, or replacement of parts.

Performs general utility functions, such as hanging shelves, bulletin boards, shades, and replacement of floor or ceiling tiles, doorknobs.

Performs equipment monitoring of gauges, control panels, meters, and similar devices.

Performs some plumbing repairs such as unclogging drains in sanitary systems, replacement of leaky washers, flushometers, etc.

Replaces defective bulbs, sockets, switches, fuses, and receptacles.

Assists and coordinates with tradespersons, as required.

Performs inventory and inspection duties and reports unsafe conditions in building and equipment damages.

Maintains work areas in safe and clean operating condition.

All tools and supplies will be provided.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Formal trade or technology training with at least 6 months of experience in AC electrical wiring.

Motivated self-starter that can work independently throughout the day. Must have an attention to detail and quality.

Must be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, to Facilities staff or tradespersons, and others. Must be able to read, write, type and communicate in English fluently and effectively. Onsite reports will be required.

Must be capable to carry tools, equipment, and material; work overhead on ladders, in cramped and crowded spaces and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions.

Desire to learn and grow new skills.

Skilled with power and hand tools.

Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Exceptional safety record.

Excellent troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills.

Previous related experience working in a business professional environment.
