Position Overview:
The Portsmouth Schools Foundation is seeking a new Executive Director to lead the organization to the next level in growth and sustainability by raising money, raising awareness and raising support. The Executive Director will carry out the mission of the Foundation to support the Portsmouth Public Schools district and assume responsibility for the overall management, fiscal operations and fundraising efforts of the organization at the direction of the Board of Directors.
About the Portsmouth Schools Foundation:
The Portsmouth Schools Foundation was established in 1986, to promote the positive accomplishments throughout the Portsmouth Public Schools and to create opportunities and resources for further improvement. The Foundation consistently serves as a vital link between the schools and the community. To date, the Portsmouth Schools Foundation has improved the quality of life for PPS students by providing philanthropic scholarships, individual funding for school-wide STEM and various instructional & extra-curricular programs, resources for students and their families to address specific immediate needs as well as offer workshops and events to recognize and encourage community activism.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Non-Profit Administration, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, Communications, Education, Finance or Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilitiesPossess strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire and guide towards a common goal2-4 years progressively responsible experience leading initiatives on behalf of a non-profit organization or public agencyAbility to manage multiple projects and responsibilities effectively; prioritize and meet deadlinesProficient in fundraising (extensive experience working with potential donors, seeking new funding sources)Proficient in grant writing, grant management ( with proven results )Proficient in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office software, all social media platformsPossess strong skills in multimedia communications, community relations and interfacing with television/radio/print mediaStrong event planning, teambuilding, budget and program management skillsDynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organizationProven success working with a board of directorsMust successfully pass a credit check and criminal background checkSpecific Responsibilities:
Flexible hours required. Must be willing to occasionally work outside of normal business hours; some weekday evenings, weekends to attend community related events, meetings and conferences.Local travel required. Must be willing to travel throughout the Hampton Roads region (to include the Peninsula area; and Richmond on occasion)Meeting attendance required. Must attend all bi-monthly board meetings.Program Management and Administration
Work with PPS and foundation committees in providing a clear vision and managing all programs and services.Maintain office and software systems to support all development projects and program operations to include the foundation's fundraising database.Develop and maintain effective working collaborations with stakeholders.Meets with and communicates on a monthly basis with community leaders, area non-profits, businesses, school officials and other stakeholders.Ensures the foundation is in compliance with all state and federal requirements.Create and provide monthly reports of all foundation activities to the board of directors.Maintain all fiscal systems and controls.Finance and Budget
Works with the Treasurer and members of the Finance committee to develop annual budget for review and approval by the Board of DirectorsMaintain adequate fiscal systems and controls, accurate record keeping to ensure effective audit recordsPrepare, submit and maintain records of all grant proposals and activitiesBoard Relations
Attend all bi-monthly Board of Director meetingsWork with committees to develop and expand program events and activitiesWork with committee to identify and expand donor base and community outreachMeets regularly with Executive team to maintain strong communication and report on progress prior to bi-monthly meetingsProvide administrative support to board and committees as neededFundraising
Lead the annual fundraising planning process to produce effective event strategies to propel the mission of the Foundation.Prepare and submit monthly reports and updates on fundraising efforts and results.Identify and solicit new individual and corporate donors to maximize program and event sponsorships.Develop and maintain effective relationships and retention.Create and maintain a donor database (actual and potential)Maintain all records of fundraising activities and events.Provide follow-up and ongoing communication with donors to include appreciation feedback and tax information.Submit grants requests and necessary grant reports to private Foundations and state educational departments.Public Relations
Supervise and manage the foundation website, newsletter, brochures and all social media platformsCoordinate media relations with PPS media departmentUpdate the website monthly to highlight events and activitiesPlan publicity strategies and campaignsWrite and produce presentations and press releasesCreate presentations for businesses, school events, and the community to raise awareness for the Foundation's missionManage inquiries from the community, school district, media and other organizationsBenefits:
Full-time hours (40+)The hiring range for this position is $50,000 to $70,000 (Annual bonus option); commensurate with related experienceComparable to experienceSalary History requiredSpecial Considerations
Salary commensurate with experience.Please note that Portsmouth Public Schools is serving as a staffing agent for the Portsmouth Schools Foundation. However, the Portsmouth Schools Foundation Executive Director is not a Portsmouth Public Schools employee.
