Public Health Nurse (School Health)

Arlington County's Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Public Health Nurse to provide services as part of the School Health Bureau, Public Health Division (PHD). This Nurse will provide school health services to culturally diverse populations in one or more Arlington school clinics, public health clinics, other Department of Human Services Units, and to community buildings to facilitate services or to participate in meetings or task forces. Specific duties include: Assessing the health care needs of students, identifying medically at-risk students, and creating care plans for those students; Referring children with health problems/needs to care resources as appropriate; Providing health education to students, parents, and staff on a variety of topics, including Family Life Education; Reviewing students' health documentation to ensure compliance with school entry requirements; Collaborating with the Community Health Protection Bureau in case finding and investigations; Collaborating and consulting with communities in areas of health promotion as appropriate; Working with School Health Aides to ensure an effective team approach to student services; Providing routine first aid care and emergency care to students in the absence of the School Health Aide; Providing clinical guidance to the School Health Aide and overseeing student care; and Establishing effective lines of communication with parents, school and DHS staff. Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university; Some experience providing care as a Registered Nurse (RN); Must possess a current and valid license as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or by endorsement from another state to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia; and Current certification of CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. If eligible from another state, the selected candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain a license from Virginia. Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year-for-year basis Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: Master's Degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field; Public health work experience in a school setting; Pediatric nursing experience; and/or Bilingual in English/Spanish. Special Requirements Certifications/Licensure: The applicant must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. The Board of Nursing may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant who has been licensed as a professional nurse by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory. The applicant must also possess a current certification of CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire. Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license or the must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at multiple locations other than the primary worksite. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record. Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information. A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will also be completed before hire. Additional Information Work Hours: Typically between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening hours for other clinics, events, and meetings throughout Arlington County. This is a year-round position and may be filled at part-time or full-time status. Primary work location will be at one or more Arlington Public School clinics. Meetings and training will be held at the School Health Bureau's main office (2110 Washington Blvd.) or at other locations throughout Arlington County.
