Director of Facilities and Grounds
for an immediate start at an independent school in
Burlington, Vermont.The Director will be responsible for managing a team, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, coordinating capital projects, and maintaining the aesthetic and functional integrity of school facilities and landscapes.Responsibilities:Oversee all daily operations related to the maintenance, repair, and functionality of the school's buildings, including classrooms, athletic facilities, administrative offices, and communal spaces.Plan and implement preventive maintenance schedules for electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and other critical systems.Manage security systems and procedures, ensuring safety and compliance with fire and safety codes.Monitor energy efficiency and implement strategies to reduce the school's carbon footprint and operational costs.Ensure the upkeep and landscaping of school grounds, athletic fields, parking lots, and outdoor spaces to maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-kept appearance.Oversee snow removal, storm clean-up, and seasonal landscaping requirements.Manage field usage schedules and maintenance, ensuring the safety and readiness of sports facilities.Coordinate and oversee capital improvement projects, renovations, and large-scale maintenance initiatives.Serve as the primary liaison with contractors, vendors, and service providers during construction, repair, or renovation projects.Develop and manage project timelines and budgets, ensuring timely completion within budget constraints.Hire, lead, and supervise the maintenance and custodial staff, ensuring high performance and accountability.Assign tasks, monitor progress, and provide ongoing training and development opportunities.Create and implement staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage during school hours, events, and emergencies.Conduct regular safety inspections and address issues promptly.Manage risk assessments and implement corrective actions when necessary.Maintain records and documentation for safety, inspections, maintenance, and project completion.Develop and manage the department's annual budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources.Approve purchases of supplies, equipment, and services, while maintaining cost control. Implement procurement strategies for cost-effective purchasing and contracting.Requirements:Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.Experience working in a school or similar environment. Certification in facilities management (CFM) or other relevant certifications.Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in facilities and grounds management, preferably in an educational setting. Proven leadership and team management skills.Strong knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) and grounds maintenance best practices.Familiarity with safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards.Excellent project management skills, with experience handling multiple projects and vendors.
