Job Characteristics
The City is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual to provide protective service and professional rescue lifeguarding work in order to ensure the safety of patrons at the City's aquatic facility in accordance with all City policies, procedures and safety regulations. This is a part-time position, working hours vary from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Maximum of 28 hours per week.
Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used:
Basic water safety and lifeguard rescue equipment; basic pool equipment such as chair lifts, pool covers and rollers, lane lines; sound system; janitorial equipment; one piece bathing suit.Essential Job Functions
Monitors activities of patrons in and around the City's pool and splash pad; protecting life; enforcing swimming regulations and providing instruction.Maintains surveillance of patrons in area of responsibility;Performs rescue procedures and administers CPR and First Aid to injured or ill patrons as necessary;Enforces aquatic safety rules and regulations in a tactful and effective manner;Maintains discipline at the aquatic center;Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance;Collects and records admission and program fees, keeps attendance and activity records, processes program registrations;Collects data for and completes required forms and reports;Inspects facility for unsafe conditions to prevent accidents and reports any hazards to the supervisor;Assists with routine facility and equipment maintenance;Performs janitorial tasks to maintain a clean and sanitary facility.
Other Job Functions:
Maintains fitness in order to perform job adequately which requires swimming endurance and strength;Attends periodic meetings and training sessions required by the supervisor;May assist swim instructors with lessons or swim team;Acts as a role model for young children;Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster;Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills :Knowledge of swimming methods and techniques; knowledge of current lifesaving techniques and procedures; knowledge of principles and techniques of CPR and first aid.
Ability to swim strongly and handle frightened or injured persons in or out of the water; ability to move persons of varying weight from the water to dry land; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to enforce orders firmly but tactfully; ability to remain alert over long periods of time; ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public; ability to work rotating hours including nights, weekends, and holidays; ability to remain at a city work shelter, before, during and after a hurricane or other storm or disaster, if asked.
Skill in swimming; skill in lifesaving rescues and techniques. Must pass swimming assessment test at time of interview (300 yards freestyle in 6 minutes; 25 yards performing safety rescue strokes back, side, breast, and free). Must pass rescue and techniques assessment test at time of interview (perform active rescue; perform passive rescue; CPR demonstration).
Minimum Qualifications :Current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED required. High school diploma, or equivalent, or a recognized ability to read and write English. Previous experience desirable. Must enjoy working with children.
Working hours:Hours will vary based on needs and availability (approximately 15 to 25 hours per week); Aquatic Center hours are Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.Supplemental Information
Physical Demands :This ranges from continual light work to occasional extreme labor-intensive work based on rescue situations. Requires frequent walking and standing; sitting for long periods; frequent stooping, bending, and reaching; frequent swimming; lifting 50+ pounds and carrying/pushing/pulling 50+ pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing, and speech; working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time.
Salary Information:$15.00 per hour; part time or temporary positions working less than 30 hours per week are not currently eligible for employment benefits. Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration. Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience. Following a thorough background investigation including a criminal history, the candidate will be given a conditional offer of employment. The final candidate will be required to pass a drug test.
