The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose of Position
Under general supervision, performs custodial services required to maintain assigned school buildings and adjacent ground areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. The duties listed below are commonly performed. This list is not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required to complete as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
From a prepared work schedule, performs work that includes, but is not limited to:Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks aligned to District standards for various interior/exterior building fixtures, including all flooring, restrooms, ceilings, and wall surfaces in classrooms, hallways, gyms, offices, cafeterias, and nurses stations as well as removing all trash and recyclingRefill necessary supplies, including paper products, throughout the building, including custodial carts and storage areasAssist in loading and unloading with various building deliveriesProcess room moves and teacher requestsWillingness to learn and ability to process building permitsSet-up, take down, and clean building events and permit holdersComplete minor preventive maintenance including, but not limited to, lamp replacement, dispenser installation, custodial equipment, repairing lockers, window latches, door hinges, and washing windowsPerform outdoor duties including, but not limited to, trash pick-up, landscaping, mowing, string trimming, snow removal, ice removal, salting, sanding, and other seasonal maintenanceSafety and security duties including, but not limited to, reporting safety and fire hazards to supervisor, arming security systems, security checks of buildings and grounds, turning out lights, locking all windows and doorsCommunicate information and receive requests from school staff, the public, student and others who are using the building, related to the performance of custodial servicesProvide quality customer service and communication to support staff and studentsDress appropriately per Employee Handbook section 3.29, with Photo I.D. visibleWork varied shifts as assigned as neededReview, enter and sign off tasks for completion (e.g., work orders, preventative maintenance) in EAM as requiredCarry and respond to any assigned district-provided communication devices (e.g., phones, radio)Other related duties as assignedKnowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to take initiative and prioritize the completion of assigned tasksAbility to communicate and work effectively and professionally with and serve school district personnel, students, and the communityAbility to lead others and share knowledge related to job dutiesAbility to clearly communicate in English for emergency response situationsAbility to learn and navigate current softwareKnowledge and appropriate use of cleaning materials, solutions, and proceduresMinimum Qualifications
Successful completion of custodial trainee programPossess and maintain a valid driver's license and reliable means of transportationExperience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward one's own cultural competence (i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas)Experience working independently, in teams, and leading othersPhysical and Sensory Requirements:
This job is physically demanding - medium to heavy work.There is constant standing, walking, and moving depending on day to day tasks. There will be frequent pushing and pulling of loads up to 70+ pounds. There is frequent bending, stooping, and utilizing proper lifting techniques loads up to 50+ pounds. There is frequent sitting, driving, squatting, crouching, ladder and stair climbing, able to handle 10 ft heights, crawling, reaching, kneeling, lifting up to 75 pounds, and repetitive movements with both hands. Verbal and auditory communication is frequently used. Near and far vision acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and feeling are frequently utilized.
