Job SummaryThe Bus Safety Training Specialist trains and supervises school bus drivers and attendants for the Anchorage School District. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
Job RequirementsThe following are required:
A high school diploma or equivalent.A valid Alaska school bus driver's permit.Ability to supervise and motivate employees in the course of transporting students to and from schools.Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the transportation of school children.Knowledge of the type of equipment and methods of routing and scheduling of drivers and equipment.Ability to conduct driver check-rides and evaluations.
The following are preferred:
Knowledge of Anchorage metropolitan area streets and geography.Knowledge of rules, procedures, and policies of the Transportation Department.
Essential Job Functions
Supervises and evaluates bus drivers and bus attendants.Conducts classroom and behind-the-wheel training of student transportation drivers.Conducts classroom and on-the-job training of bus attendants who are new to the Anchorage School District.Monitors loading and unloading of students at schools and bus stops.Monitors ASD and contracted buses for operational and safety violations.Conducts hazardous road and driving conditions surveys.Acts as dispatcher during absence of regular assigned dispatcher.Surveys the location/placement of bus stops for availability, serviceability, and safety.Attends parent, teacher, student, and driver conferences.Conducts accident investigations and safety meetings.
Physical /Mental DemandsThe physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
