JOB SUMMARY

The school district nurse assists students, in cooperation with school personnel, community agencies and parents; to acquire health knowledge; to acquire attitudes conducive to healthful living; to meet their needs resulting from illness, accident, and physical defect; and to maintain, improve, or adapt to their individual health status. Reports to the Director of Special Education.

In accordance with standards of school nursing practice, Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Nurse Practice Act implement appropriate use of the nursing process to plan and provide individualized nursing care in the school community, including nursing delegation and training for an anticipated emergency.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:

JOB SUMMARY

The school district nurse assists students, in cooperation with school personnel, community agencies and parents;

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Review student records in order to make a list for staff of serious health problems.Develop medical protocols for students requiring specific procedures: seizures, bee stings, suctioning, catheterization, tube feeding, etc.Train and monitor appropriate staff on medical protocols.Follow legal state process for immunization requirements.To respond and assist teachers, parents, and students in answering questions, providing information and clarification regarding health issues and concerns in a timely manner. May include classroom presentations.Upon request of staff, parents, and students, complete an assessment of medical concerns, evaluate possible communicable diseases and initiate necessary procedures, referrals and follow-up.Manage delivery of school health services including health screenings, communicable disease control, health education and environmental monitoring.Set up and monitor procedures in each building for dispensing medications, providing guidelines, training and policies to school personnel.Set up and monitor procedures necessary for sixth grade camp; physical questionnaires, medications and permission forms, special need students, etc.Arrange and coordinate administration of Hepatitis B vaccine to staff.Maintain staff records of Hepatitis B vaccine, permission/refusal form and post-exposure records.Evaluate and recommend revision of health policies and procedures as appropriate.Provide interpretation of available state laws regarding communicable disease and immunization laws.Abide by FERPA and HIPPA confidentiality requirements.Confer with principals and superintendent on health policies.Serve as a consultant, upon request, to the safety office for compliance with health related issues/procedures, (blood spill clean up kits, first aid training of staff, etc.) Set up post-exposure routine for staff.Write a yearly evaluation of school health programs and provide copies to superintendent and school board for annual review.Will develop, implement, and review with Director of Special Education annual schedule of activities to be completed, and make appropriate modifications as needed or requested.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The School Nurse/Nurse works with groups of students and on a one-to-one basis. Students include those who may be physically and mentally handicapped, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, and culturally different. Supervision and instructional responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 90 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations when a student's safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to travel between schools.
