As the Service Mesh Platform Engineer in the Internet Gateway and API Management team you will be responsible for leading a variety of engineering activities including the design, acquisition and deployment of hardware, software and network infrastructure in coordination with the Client/Partner technology teams to deliver a hybrid, multi-cloud enterprise service mesh solution. This is a hands-on technical experience opportunity with the scope to impact tens of thousands of developers in the firm. Responsibilities:

Impact the engineering function by influencing decisions through advice, counsel or facilitating services and hands-on Development.

Serve as a technology subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders to design and implement a robust service mesh architecture, encompassing traffic management, security, observability, and resilience for microservices across public and private cloud.

Integrate the service mesh with existing infrastructure and applications, ensuring seamless operation and interoperability with various platforms and technologies, including legacy systems.

Establish and enforce service mesh best practices, including security policies, traffic routing rules, circuit breakers, and access control mechanisms, to maintain a secure and reliable application environment.

Work directly with clients/partner application teams to drive rollout of tools, educate teams, and assist with adoption. Work closely with networking and security teams to ensure secure and efficient integration with on-premises infrastructure and networks.

Develop comprehensive monitoring and observability dashboards to provide deep insights into service mesh health, performance, and potential issues, enabling proactive problem identification and resolution.

Partner with SREs to establish service mesh observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies for maintaining high availability and performance, collaborating to define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets.

Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Knowledge/Experience:

In-depth understanding of service mesh architecture, components, and configuration options, including advanced traffic management, security policies, and telemetry customization.

Proven track record of designing, implementing, and managing service mesh solutions at Fortune 500 scale, addressing performance, security, and observability.

Hands on experience with Kong Service Mesh and Apigee Hybrid are required. Bonus for any experience extending and customizing the service mesh and developing related tools.

Extensive experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms, including networking, security, and service management. Preference for experiences with OpenShift, AWS EKS, and GKE.

Deep understanding of microservices design patterns, service discovery mechanisms, API gateways, and distributed tracing.

Expertise in tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Open Telemetry, and/or Kiali to monitor service mesh performance and troubleshoot issues.

Knowledge of zero-trust security principles, authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g. SSO, SAML, OAuth2.0), load balancers, firewalls, DMZ, and encryption technologies and related best practices for service mesh integration.

Understanding of SRE principles and experience applying them to service mesh environments for reliability and performance optimization.

Must have expertise in Unix shell scripting and at least one more other common scripting/automation languages/environments like JavaScript, Perl, Ansible, etc.

Qualifications:

7-10 years of relevant experience in an Engineering/DevOps role

6+ years of experience designing, implementing, and managing microservices architectures.

3+ years of experience with Kubernetes and container orchestration platforms.

At least 2 years of experience on Kong Service Mesh, with at least 1 year on v2.x a must.

Ability to work under pressure and manage to tight deadlines or unexpected changes in expectations or requirements. Experience working in Financial Services or a large complex and/or global environment

Proven ability to lead technical projects and mentor other engineers.

Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication.

Comprehensive knowledge of design metrics, analytics tools, benchmarking activities and related reporting to identify best practices.
