The Manager, Network Engineering, Wired will manage a team of network engineers responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of UCSF's wired network infrastructure. This role encompasses overseeing the team's daily operations, developing strategies for network optimization, reliability, and security, and working closely with the Associate Director, Network Wired and Wireless to align network wired efforts with the broader goals of UCSF. The Manager, Network Engineering, Wired will also ensure that network solutions support UCSF's academic, research, administrative, and operational goals and will collaborate with other departments, stakeholders, and vendors to facilitate the successful planning and execution of network projects. This person will leverage their expertise in wired network technologies and strong management, communication, and project management skills to manage this team.

The Manager, Network Engineering, Wired will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic, medical, and research mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. Involves operation of the campus, medical center, or Office of the President communications network, including telecommunications. Plans, designs, develops, installs, and maintains communications network systems for the campus, medical center, or Office of the President or a unit.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the UCSFs' network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.

Required QualificationsBachelor's Degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.5 to 7+ years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations.Significant experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments. Advanced understanding of professional communications and network systems.Advanced technical skills in wired network design, configuration, and troubleshooting, including comprehensive knowledge of WAN and LAN technologies, routing protocols (such as OSPF, BGP), MPLS, VxLAN,QoS, and other networking concepts. Full knowledge of their area of functional responsibility and a thorough understanding of the practices and techniques of the voice and data field.Advanced knowledge of monitoring tools and commands to ensure swift resolution of issues, as well as thorough knowledge and experience working with network management systems.The ability to manage network projects efficiently, including resource allocation, budgeting, and scheduling. Ability to gather, organize, and prioritize work assignments, even with limited guidance.Skills in using network monitoring tools (such as SolarWinds, Nagios, Datadog, PRTG) and diagnostic tools (such as Wireshark) to troubleshoot and optimize network performance. Technical knowledge and skills associated with voice and data network systems.Advanced written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner. Ability to assign work to medium-sized teams and demonstrated experience presenting complex technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.Demonstrated leadership/management skills, including abilities in persuasion, negotiation, change management, and mentorship. Demonstrated skill in managing technical staff.Advanced project management skills with demonstrated experience in delegating responsibility, tracking project progress, supervising others, and advising teams on competing priorities. Significant experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.Extensive experience in solving technical and non-technical problems; the ability to delegate problem-solving when appropriate to the proper resources. Ability to lead data gathering efforts, seeking information from multiple and diverse sources. Experience operating as a point of escalation is needed. Demonstrated understanding of how decisions affect teams and the ability to make decisions with integrity.Demonstrated experience in providing inclusive leadership to others, cultivating an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.The ability to inspire creativity in others and advise teams on industry-leading practices, such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Demonstrated experience leading in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment.Preferred Qualifications3 to 5+ years experience leading teams in a management or leadership role, particularly in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.Understanding of network security principles and best practices, as well as experience with implementing security policies and compliance with regulations (e.g., GDPR, FERPA).Substantial experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, F5, Infoblox, and Palo Alto Networks, along with an in-depth, advanced understanding of various network hardware platforms, network-related protocols, and software.Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic, medical, and research and administrative functions of a large public university.Cisco Certified Network Professional certification (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications. Equivalent Arista, Juniper or Aruba certifications will be reviewedCisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)Experience with Load Balancing Platforms such as A10, F5, Netscaler, or VMWare NX Load Balancers.
