GIS Technician/Surveyor

Mission StatementWe provide field, range, testing, chemical, and biological laboratory support to the U.S. Army at the West Desert Test Center (WDTC) located at Dugway Proving Ground (DPG), UT. As a major test site for the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, the WDTC is responsible for the test and evaluation of chemical and biological (CB) defense systems, incendiary and smoke/obscuration munitions systems, and related operational concepts.In addition to these responsibilities, we also support non-CB testing at the WDTC for the DOD and other Federal agencies, including environmental assessment/impact evaluation and munitions demilitarization.
Our Dugway Operation was established in 2004 with the award of the Field, Range, Chamber, and Laboratory Support Services (FRC&LSS) contract to through the FRC&LSS contract, we have integrated with Mellor Engineering, TOPE, and JRAD with a composite staff size of more than 170 personnel.
Job Descripton:
A GIS technician will collect and input data into the geographic information system from a variant of different sources.
A GIS technician performs data collection of utility assets in the field utilizing manual mapping methods, mobile data terminals, build work requests designs, construction drawings and digital and hardcopy information received from governmental agencies or any other digital or manual source as required.
A GIS technician utilizes GIS data translation and manipulation software, job design tools, GPS data/asset collection, analyzing and resource tracking tools as needed to maintain the geographic information system.
A GIS technician produces maps in support of the WDTC mission.
The candidate will be required to meet with a Test Officer, Engineer, or customer to identify, coordinate, develop, and finalize the extent and scope of the desired survey, drawing or GIS information.
The desired survey may range from the simple location of points with respect to a monument/bench mark or orientation to an existing fixture, roadway, or multiple monument/bench marks.
The candidate may be required to locate impact points from fired artillery rounds, layout a course or route from known or unknown points and provide feedback from intended routes to actual route taken, develop and layout a desired grid or firing range from a small scale (square feet) to large scale (square miles).
Job Duties:
The selected candidate will be experienced with and able to perform various types of field surveys and or tasks, including but not limited to:
Topographic surveys
Land Survey Horizontal Grids
Construction staking and field calculations
Must be able to read and understand construction plans and specifications
Proficiency with GPS, Total Station, Data Collectors (Topcon and Magnet preferred)
Strong organizational skills including field notes and project documentation
Experience with Microsoft Office and general computer tasks
AutoCAD Civil 3d experience is a plus
SIT is a plus
Assign geographic projections to feature datasets within existing geodatabase
Manually create point, line and polynomial feature datasets
Import point, line and polynomial vector features from Excel spreadsheets
Re-format Latitude/Longitude survey coordinates into UTM vice versa and transformation of Datum
Coordinate with other GIS sections to create joint products
