Overview
University of Utah Health is seeking a new Executive Director for the Huntsman Mental Health Institute!
This position provides oversight and direction for all clinical operational aspects of Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), an operating unit of the University of Utah Health: Hospitals and Clinics (UUHC).
In coordination with UUHC executive leadership, this position is responsible for overseeing operations, strategic planning, leadership, project management and financial accountability for the mental health hospital, outpatient clinics, telehealth programs, integrated crisis network, residential programs, and Home Medical Program. In addition, the position ensures the integration between clinical operations and HMHI research and training programs, and acts as a liaison with external city, county, state behavioral and mental health organizations, legislative bodies, and/or other external representatives. The incumbent is responsible for performance metrics related to patient satisfaction, clinical quality, and financial performance.
This position works closely with the Vice-Chair/Medical Director of Clinical Affairs, Nursing and Clinical Operations Leaders, the Vice Chair for Research, the Vice Chair for Education, the Executive Director of the Academic Operations, and respective leadership teams to evaluate current and proposed operational systems and procedures by collecting and analyzing data from technology systems, operational practices, emerging industry trends, expansion opportunities, and financial objectives to improve business performance, process improvement and create a service line of excellence.
Acting as a liaison between UUHC executives, School of Medicine Chairs, and Department leadership, this role advances organizational goals related to financial, quality and patient-centered outcomes. Provides input to strategic decisions of the CEO of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and UUHC leadership that affect the mental health service line, and presents organizational review reports to executives and management for use in the objectives and goals of HMHI.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related area, or equivalent experience.
Ten years of progressively more responsible experience in a health care setting or equivalency.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working in an academic medical center or large, multi-faceted health care organization.
Two or more years of experience in behavior or mental health settings and/or leadership.
Responsibilities Performs to required standards for job specific responsibilities and technical competencies.
Reports to the UUHC COO and CEO of HMHI to achieve patient satisfaction and quality metrics by the clinical operational teams, to develop, implement and execute strategies for improved clinical performance and business operations for the system.
Engages, supports, and develops the operations, strategy, and planning with the Medical Director, Disease Team Leaders, hospital directors and managers.
This position will be responsible for direct reports overseeing the Huntsman Mental Health and Clinics and will set goals consistent with the clinical enterprise’s exceptional patient experience, quality, and financial strength goals.
Collaboration Contributes as a vital member of the UUHC Clinical Operations Council and other committees addressing various strategic outcomes and initiatives.
Works closely with the Executive Vice Chair and Medical Directors to achieve operational and clinical objectives.
Collaborates with Executive Leadership team to achieve objectives related to clinical trials, research, and education.
Communication Proactively engages with all internal and external business partners to achieve goals and organization business objectives.
Forms positive associations with staff, peers, and other senior leadership to support the mission, vision, values, and performance standards of the organization.
Ability to translate strategy into clear, concise, and actionable initiatives and action plans.
Technical Development Develops and maintains a market-specific strategy consistent with improved methodologies for oncology service line operations.
Analyzes data to identify and recommend new processes and procedures and streamline business operations.
Financial Management Develops and maintains a value-based strategy consistent with return on investment.
Oversees the development of new business, reimbursement models, and ensures contracts meet the legal, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
Responsible for developing, monitoring, and achieving budget goals.
Manages labor and non-labor budgets to minimize costs and maximize potential revenue.
Responsible for revenue stabilization and enhancement initiatives.
Quality Manages and promotes continuous process improvements in all oncology services.
Identifies and recommends strategies to streamline and improve operational efficiencies.
Ensures all guidelines for the accreditation promulgated by DNV are communicated to meet all compliance standards.
Performance Management Responsible for providing leadership and establishing project objectives to meet the operational goals and deliverables for all projects assigned.
Responsible for management and resolution of business and/or professional conflicts in a proactive manner and for reaching resolution in a timely fashion.
Responsible for hiring, training, performance goals, evaluations, employee discipline and coaching, and development of staff.
Provides feedback and recognition when appropriate.
Relationships and Engagement Actively engages staff with updates and news as well as involving staff in decisions and work teams.
Responsible for upholding PROMISE behavior standards in all internal and external interactions.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Ability to perform the KPI's of the job as outlined above.
Demonstrated leadership, human relations, and effective communication skills.
Knowledge of hospital business operations and demonstrated strategic planning skills.
Knowledge of budgeting practices, reporting analysis, and forecasting.
