The Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) program in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in digital design beginning August 1, 2025. The department seeks candidates whose research is centered on digital fashion, smart textile/clothing, and digital retailing. Candidates with multi/multi-disciplinary research experience are encouraged to apply. The course assignments will include undergraduate courses in (1) a design studio covering digital design (using Browzwear and/or CLO) and smart textile/clothing production and (2) fashion forecasting and digital marketing. Qualified candidates shall possess a promising record of scholarly achievement research agenda and be able to support students through advising as well as mentorship. The department is interested in candidates who have experience working with students, community partners, and stakeholders from diverse populations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop a nationally recognized research program in Fashion Design and Merchandising.Teach in the related areas such as design studio focusing on digital textile design, digital design and pattern-making using Browzwear and/or CLO, smart textile; functional clothing production incorporating wearable technology, health monitors, and biosensors, and fashion forecasting and digital marketing.Obtain grants and pursue other funding opportunities to provide program sustainability.Mentor undergraduate students in the ITAA design competition and other professional competitions.Contribute to the Fashion Design and Merchandising (FDM) program and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at the College and University levels.Provide service to the college, university, profession, and community, as well as perform other faculty duties as required.

Minimum QualificationsDoctorate from a college or university of recognized standing in the fashion field, marketing/business, textile engineering/technology, or computer-related field with experience in fashion design. ABD candidates may be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed at the time of hire.Experience in functional clothing production using various digital design software, smart textiles, and wearable technology. Work experience with digital marketing/retailing or textile materials development is welcome.Demonstrated teaching ability and evidence of strong teaching skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels.Demonstrated scholarly achievement in fashion research.Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and colleagues.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with community partners and stakeholders.

Desirable QualificationsDoctorate in the fashion field or at least one degree in the fashion field.Degree in marketing and business, textile engineering, or computer-related areas (i.e., AI, machine learning, data science, computer engineering, computer science/programming, information technology).Strong track record of scholarly publications and successful acquisition of extramural funding.Experience in the following content areas/specialization: digital textile design, smart textile, digital design software, technical skills in garment construction and production, augmented reality and virtual reality applications, AI applications, digital retailing and marketing, and big data analysis.Experience in instruction or research with digital fashion, smart clothing production with emerging technologies, and digital retailing/marketing.Knowledge of sustainable fashion practices and/or textile material sciences.Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching.Experience in working in the fashion industry.Experience in engaging in a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning (e.g., engages and connects with Native Hawaiian communities/organizations for reciprocal teaching and learning and experience with providing Native Hawaiian student support).Evidence demonstrating research/professional activities that are potential benefits for the health, social, and economic well-being of the people of Hawai'i.
