About The RoleThe New York Times is looking for a software engineer with full stack skills to join the Gameplay squad within the Games team. You’ll join a team of engineers, designers, and product managers to help create incredible, immersive gaming experiences across The New York Time’s suite of unique games. You’ll be part of an engineering organization that values transparency and openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.Your work will include engineering new and exciting features for our portfolio of games such as the NYT Crossword, Spelling Bee, Wordle, and Connections that deepen engagement of our players. You will work closely with Product, Design, and Production to plan, implement, launch, and reflect on the work. Come help us on our journey to grow a world-class gaming product, as we continue delivering delightful experiences to millions daily.We generally build our web applications in TypeScript and Node.js, and front-ends in React with accessible, semantic HTML and CSS, and our APIs in Go. We’re hosted almost entirely on Google Cloud Platform and will eventually move to AWS.This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters reporting to the Engineering Manager, Games.Basic Qualifications2+ years of full-time software engineering experience building features in large scale distributed systems2+ years of experience writing performant server-side code with any of: Go, Java, PythonExperience using systems in cloud infrastructure, including databases, queues, caching layers, container runtimes, content distribution, and moreExperience in front-end code web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, TypeScript, web performance, accessibility)Familiarity with one or more frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue)Preferred QualificationsPrior experience or knowledge of game or puzzle development and designDemonstrated interest in working alongside an accomplished team of engineers for a mission-driven organization like The New York TimesAbility to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and share learnings with othersExperience keeping end user satisfaction as top priorityThe annual base pay range for this role is between $104,000 — $130,000 USD.The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve.
