Position Type: Plumber/Plumber II Date Posted: 10/4/2024 Location: Plant and Facilities Services Date Available: When Filled Closing Date: 10/25/2024 West Hartford Public Schools seeks to fill a position for a full-time Plumber II at Plant & Facilities Services. This is a 12-month position, Monday - Friday, 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm. Reports to the Plumbing Foreman & Manager of Maintenance Services or Designee. Job Description: This is skilled work at the journeyman level in plumbing. Work involves responsibility for the performance of assignments requiring the use of standard plumbing skills in the maintenance and operation of plumbing, heating, fire sprinkler, hot water and irrigation systems for school building and related facilities. Assignments designated in form requests for services from various schools and/or in form of blueprints and specifications. Occasional supervision required for one or more helpers. Work is subject to review for inspection upon completion, although normal repairs are completed independently without supervision or close review. Work performed in various settings subject to some interruptions and background noise. Work performed with independence and initiative, referring unusual problems to the Manager of Maintenance Services or designee. Performs varied and responsible functions requiring judgment to ensure compliance with applicable departmental and BOE/town policies, procedures and methods. Manages and coordinates multiple priorities adhering to established periods. Has frequent contact with employees, other BOE/town departments, and vendors. Possible exposure to smells associated with sewer and water systems and sounds associated with use of power tools and construction sites. Requirements: Graduation from a standard high school or trade school with three (3) years' experience as a journeyman plumber or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of P-2 Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber license for plumbing work. Possession of a valid and job-related Connecticut drivers' license. Must have successful completion of pre-employment physical examination, drug test and criminal background check. Possession of P-1 Unlimited Plumbing Contractor license, Fire Protection Licenses (F1 or F-2) and backflow device certification. Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, terminology and best practices of the plumbing and steamfitting trades. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades. Ability to make time and material estimates for repairs and projects. Ability to interpret and work from sketches and blueprints. Ability to occasionally plan and assign work to helpers and laborers. Skill in locating and correcting defects in plumbing, heating devices, machines and other trade-related equipment. Skill in the use of the standard tools, equipment and testing devices of the trade. Knowledge of computers, basic office software and other modern office equipment. Ability to effectively interact with others in person or by telephone. Must be able to concentrate on fine details with occasional interruption. Must be mobile, ability to push/pull light objects, occasionally lift objects up to 75 pounds. Duties: Duties for this position include, but are not limited to the following: Plans additions and alterations to plumbing, heating, air conditioning, ventilating and oil burning systems in schools and school structures. Purchases materials needed to carry out the work as well as procuring additional labor assistance when necessary. Repairs and maintains plumbing, heating, fire sprinkler, hot water and irrigation equipment; conducts regular tours and inspection of this equipment for safe and efficient operation. Does general welding in cutting and brazing work, including electric welding for repairs to structural and heating systems. Installs new plumbing including pipes, valves, vents and drains and a variety of fixtures and equipment. Adapts new steam and plumbing equipment to existing lines and extends existing facilities. Repairs and maintains existing facilities replacing damaged parts, valves, washers, cleaning traps, drains and other lines including sprinkler systems. Ensures all work completed in accordance with applicable building code regulations. Performs related work as required. Work may occasionally be required beyond normal working hours. Salary: $37.86 per hour with an additional $1.89 per hour night shift differential.
