GIS Technician, Highway Department

The GIS Technician for the Highway Department is responsible for the design, development, maintenance, and testing of the geodatabase for Highway Department assets. The primary function of this position is to build and maintain detailed and accurate datasets of Highway Department assets that allows for accurate reporting of relevant information. The GIS Technician work involves gathering and entering data into a versioned enterprise GIS database, reviewing and editing data for spatial and attribute accuracy, creating both print and online maps, and conducting analysis on spatial data as needed. This position works closely with various Highway staff and Shelby County IT Services. Effective communication with end users and timely project management with reporting and deliverables is required.Assists with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting ArcGIS Desktop software for end users.Daily analysis and maintenance of GIS data including, but not limited to, road centerlines, pavement information, signs, guardrail, culverts, bridges, traffic signals, sidewalks, and right-of-way information.Prepares reports, maps, and data related to Highway Department assets.Develops and maintains proficiency with Shelby County GIS procedures and workflows.Coordinates with Shelby County IT Services regarding schema changes as necessary.Assists in the field collection of highway asset data.Assists in other non-GIS technical projects and support roles as needed.Works non-standard hours as required.Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum 2 years’ experience editing data with Esri’s ArcGIS Desktop.Valid driver’s license.Willing to work nonstandard hours and more than 40 hours per week when necessary.Willing to travel to attend training or for other County functions required by supervisor.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

5 years’ experience with data analysis and editing with ArcGIS Desktop in a versioned, enterprise geodatabase environment.2+ years’ experience working with ArcGIS Pro/ArcMap/Portal for ArcGIS.Experience writing Definition Queries and Label Expressions in ArcMap.Experience working with ArcGIS geoprocessing tools.Experience with CityWorks asset management system.Experience with Model Builder, ArcPy, or Arcade.WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily in an office environment. Some field data collection may be required.
