What You Will Do

Weapon system engineers are called upon to provide expertise to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile for the entire weapon life cycle. The selected candidate will serve as the Project-Program Director 4 (PPD4) within the W88 Systems Engineering Group. In this capacity, the selected candidate will help ensure War Reserve (WR) production, surveillance, joint test assembly (JTA) production, significant finding investigation (SFI) closures and WR warhead sustainability are adhered to in support of the annual assessment of the warhead. In support of the Group Leader's Lead System Engineer duties, the PPD4 will be expected to provide engineering expertise to assist in resolving complex technical and programmatic issues associated with the warhead. The PPD4 will collaborate with the Group Leader in planning, organizing, and managing technical activities within the group as well as in nurturing a healthy work environment that encourages learning, teaming, creating mutual respect, and delivering excellence at all levels. This position will require regular interactions with other national laboratories and production agencies (PA), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and their contractors.

Salary Range: $163,000 - $282,200

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Weapons Experience

Working knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile. Demonstrated direct experience in one or more of the following areas: nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, and surveillance. Demonstrated experience with highly complex, system-level integrated experiments preferably involving high explosives.

Systems Engineering/Program Management

Demonstrated experience with the engineering authorization system and document management systems (e.g., PDM Link). Familiarization with project management principles (i.e. scheduling and budget management) along with an ability to meet schedules and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a wide range of priorities. Demonstrated experience in program development and strategic planning.

Management/Communication

Demonstrated leadership skills and a record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems. Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution. Demonstrated experience successfully mentoring newer staff members. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels of Laboratory personnel and external customers.

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Familiar with issues and challenges related to the W88 warhead.An understanding of nuclear physics principles is highly desirable.Familiar with Integrated Surety Architecture (ISA) principles.Demonstrated experience interacting with one or more NSE Production Agencies. Experience interacting with and presenting to upper level LANL management, NNSA and US Navy (or comparable) customers.Experience working directly with NNSA and communicating budget requirements, scope requirements, milestone reporting, and program review processes and deliverables.Knowledge of Navy Project Officer's Group structure, subcommittees and functions.Knowledge of NNSA structure.Experience in successful personnel and resource management.Derivative Classifier (DC) experience.Active Q clearance.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
