Job Title: On-call Substitute School Nurse

Reports to: School Principal and Nurse Leader

Compensation: $170 per day, $85 per half-day

Department: Nursing

FLSA Status: Per Diem

Work Year: School Year, as needed on-call

Job Goal: The School Nurse manages and coordinates health services for students within the school setting, while interacting with their educational goals, personal health, and public health needs. Responsibilities include nursing services, collaboration, health education, and community health and emergency planning.

QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Professional Certification Required:
      • Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Massachusetts (M.G.L. c.71, s.53)
      • Current CPR certification/AED training from a recognized provider (such as the American Red Cross or American Heart Association) (required)
    • Specialized Knowledge: pediatric nursing, child development, cultural proficiency, social-emotional learning, anti-bias training
    • Preferred Experience:
      • Experience in Pediatric nursing
      • Experience as a nurse in a diverse public school setting and working with English Language Learners
      • Experience with students with special needs, including students with emotional, behavioral, and/or learning challenges
      • Highly desirable to have experience with:
        • SNAP software
        • PowerSchool software
        • Google applications (gmail, docs, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Skills:
    • Ability to create a welcoming, supportive, and equitable environment
    • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory with a demonstrated commitment to remain current in content knowledge and best practices for school nurses
    • Ability to partner and collaborate with school staff, department colleagues, and administrators
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with children and adults
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, colleagues, and parents
    • Candidates should have a passion for working with students, families, and colleagues
    • Candidates should have a commitment to the education and care of all students
    • Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (C.O.R.I.), and fingerprints

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Creates a welcoming and supportive environment that embraces the diversity among individuals and ensures equitable opportunities for all
  • Manages and coordinates health services for students within the school setting, while interacting with their educational goals, personal health, and public health needs
  • Assesses children for a wide range of physical and social/emotional/behavioral illnesses and develops programs to prevent the spread of disease and promote wellness
  • Provides medically prescribed interventions, including medication administration and treatments
  • Provides first aid/emergency care to students and staff
  • Collaborates with students, parents, members of the school-based team, and community health care providers and agencies to optimize student healthcare and learning
  • Promotes positive safety practices within and outside of the school building
  • Ensures timely documentation of all encounters with students
  • Maintains comprehensive and confidential health records for students that are compliant with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Must remain proficient in current technology for health record database used throughout the system (SNAP)
  • Participates in IEP and 504 implementation as needed
  • Trains staff on EpiPen use, Life Threatening Allergy safety, and other health-related concerns as needed
  • Serves as liaison among the school, the home, community health care agencies, and other healthcare professionals
  • Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her/their department, school, and school district, and actively participates in all faculty and committee meetings as required, and district-wide committees as needed
  • Maintains and improves professional competence through active participation in professional development activities, and by self-generated activities that meet district expectations and the requirements for licensure recertification
  • Any other relative duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Substitute School Nurse does not have supervisory responsibilities for other staff.
