Children's Musical Theater Director and Teacher

Music House is seeking a
Theater Teacher and Director for our studio musical theater classes for ages 4 to 9 . The Theater Director will oversee all aspects of a theater production at Music House and collaborate with the Music House Theater Coordinator and the Musical Theater Team to create powerful educational theater experiences for our students. Classes are held in the evenings and weekends. Teachers are responsible for maintaining an engaging curriculum that is performance-based, preparing students for performances, taking and submitting attendance, following Music House procedures, collaborating with the production team on shows, and committing to scheduled classes and tech week schedule.
Schedule:
Early Musical Theater
- Fable/Folktale/Story-based pantomime class for students ages 4-6 (Spring story is Stone Soup)
Wednesdays at Humboldt Park Studio from 4:00pm-4:55pm (Starting March 5th, 2025 through May 21)
Thursdays at West Rogers Park Studio from 4:00pm-4:55pm (Starting March 6th, 2025 through May 22)
Beginning Musical Theater
- Production based class for students ages 5-9 (Spring show is Annie KIDS)
Wednesdays from 5-6pm at our Humboldt Park Studio
Thursdays from 5-6pm at our West Rogers Park Studio
Saturdays 10:30-12:00 at Dance Center Chicago
Tech Week occurs the week prior to the shows and includes extended rehearsal times as well as some extra meetings to go over tech components as needed. Performances are at Chicago High School for the Arts. Shows occur twice yearly at the end of January and the middle of June. An annual Musical Theater Team Retreat usually occurs in late June and is a day-long meeting.
Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelors or higher in your discipline (Music / Dance/ Theater) or Bachelors and relevant life experience
Excellent personal skills, desire to learn, and resilience when it comes to engaging students
Love of kids and working with children
Reliable Transportation
Teaching experience and ability to lead classes in theater skills
Strong organizational and communication skills
Strong classroom management skills
Great collaboration skills and eagerness to work on a team
Ability to pass a criminal background check
Experience collaborating with a production team
Experience directing and overseeing a production and collaborating closely with choreographer and music director and overall production team.
Responsibilities:
Create and deliver effective instruction that engages learners in ways that empower positive classroom management
Collaborate with the theater team to continue to build on the strength of our program and take on various theater department duties as they arise.
Collaborate with the theater team (when applicable) to complete a session Timeline and Lesson Plans to create a structured flow of content.
Collaborate with the theater team (when applicable) to complete and create the Show Outline, Casting documents, spacing charts and any other necessary documents for the class/production.
Create lesson plans for every rehearsal based on the needs of the Musical Theater team as laid out in the Timeline.
Collaborate with team to hold auditions for the selected show.
Collaborate with team to cast the selected show.
Provide student assessments in the form of Glows and Grows after each session ends.
Provide weekly progress updates to parents and students via google classroom.
Ability and availability to orchestrate the preparation and staging for the selected show.
Ability to identify and collaborate with Theater Coordinator on needs for set and costumes.
Collaborate with Music House administration and serve on the theater production team to produce quality performances.
Teach strong transferable musical theater skills while creating a fun and collaborative atmosphere.
Prepare students for performances each session.
Attend Music House trainings and professional developments (or test out of them).
Give input for creative and technical aspects of the selected show, to include set requirements, sound requirements, lighting requirements, costume requirements, and backstage management.
Direct and run all rehearsals, including overseeing all aspects of blocking, music, choreography, and technical design in collaboration with the Theater Coordinator, Choreographer, Music Director, and Producer.
Ability to stage manage and provide student support backstage for performance(s) of the show.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour
