Position Summary:The position is principally responsible for provisioning customers and maintaining the voice and data connectivity within a Cisco Unified Communications (UC) system environment and data-network environment. This includes configuration of customer VoIP and analog telephones and gateways, Unity Voicemail, troubleshooting customer and system problems, and coordinating circuit installation and repairs with telecommunications providers. This position also involves performing adds, moves, and changes with telecommunications cabling, including terminating cabling on network patch panels and telephone blocks, and assisting the end-user customer device setup.
Essential Functions:Manage and install the campus-wide voice-mail system, connect data circuits, activate mailboxes, and perform backups of systems. Program and install new extensions, relocate, and change programming of existing extensions.Repair, monitor, and report problems with voice circuits on NJIT UC system, Verizon, and Windstream systems, and repair data circuits.Coordinate with outside contractors to schedule wire, HVAC, and electrical installations. Oversee outside contractors during installation to assure they meet outlined specifications. Escalate unresolved incidents internally or with external vendors.Activate high-speed ports, troubleshoot special circuits such as SIP, T1, ISDN, activate fiber-optic cabling, and coordinate repairs with appropriate vendors.Mount and maintain network and telephone equipment in equipment racks located in IT rooms throughout the campus. Terminate and test telephone and network cable on telephone blocks and network patch panels.Help program, install, and test ethernet connections, switches, and electronics for adds, moves, and changes as well as new building construction and renovation.Install cabling for events and special projects.Evaluate and assess all communications rooms on campus for expansion of voice and data infrastructure.Troubleshoot and administer analog and Voice over IP phones with Cisco Unified Communications solutions, resolving any hardware and software issues related to Cisco UC.Assist in evaluation and planning of new services including hardware, software, and new technologies related to UC. Participate as a team member in large systems voice and data implementation projects.Train and supervise student employees with UC and Data projects.Maintain proper documentation for change control and for audit purposes.Apply technical troubleshooting skills to test reported incidents and resolve them in a timely manner.Plan for and respond to service outages and other problems within the university enterprise IT infrastructure. Resolve Level I and Level II incidents and service requests reported to the IST Service Desk.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
High School DiplomaA+, Cisco UC training or comparable training or certifications0-2 years of progressive experience in Unified Communications/PBX user administration and data communications installationStrong grasp of networking fundamentalsExcellent communication skillsAt the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in telecommunications or a related field.Proficiency in Windows systems.Experience with change control in an ITIL structure.
