Overview:
Plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates technical hardware and software functions for networks; installs, modifies, evaluates and reviews hardware and software functions for the local and wide area large scale network.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs complex technical duties in the installation and maintenance of data communications hardware and software which includes communications test equipment, switches and routers, Local Area Network hardware and preparation of necessary cabling to connect system components; assists in the design, support and maintenance of network systems and architecture; ensures network systems adhere to Agency standards.Performs complex testing procedures to isolate data communications transmission failures, assists Technical Support Group in solving difficult/technical protocol and data transmission problems on an as needed basis; periodically reviews and evaluates all communications circuits to ensure that current parameters comply with Agency standards.Receives inquiries from the User Support regarding system, LAN, or terminal problems, determines nature and extent of the problem and takes necessary corrective action; this includes the depoting of equipment, on site repairs, when possible, or perhaps transporting the computer equipment to the vendor; works with the vendor in isolating hardware and software problems.Travels as necessary for education, meetings and site surveys for new terminal installations, relocations, and actual installations or relocation of terminals and minicomputers.Communicates effectively information to Property Control and Equipment Control Officer regarding installations, relocation and/or removal of computer terminal equipment.Performs other duties as required or assigned.Education and Experience:
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college with coursework in the computer science field OR 2.5 years of technical systems and/or programming experience as would be gained as an Information Systems Technician OR any equivalent combination of education and experience and/or IT project management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Requires working knowledge of systems design and implementation, including the way programs are written, compiled, and tested, the methods of operating computers, and the way data is transcribed into a form suitable for reading by computer.Requires working knowledge of the devices for capturing data for computers and the means available for receiving and transmitting data from remote locations to a computer.Requires working knowledge of the advantages and limitations of computer communication, and information retrieval systems as management information tools.Requires working knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques of conducting feasibility studies for converting to computer applications.Requires the ability to organize facts and findings, analyze data logically and to present results with clarity and comprehension, orally, in written or graphic form.Requires the ability to use and understanding of appropriate methods, tools, applications, and processes.Requires the ability to approach work in a rational and organized manner.Requires the ability to exercise sound judgement in analyzing, appraising, evaluating, and solving problems of a procedural, organizational, administrative, and technical nature.Requires ability to adhere to organizational standards for security, privacy, and ethics.Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.Requires the ability to lift, carry and push and pull 50 lbs.Application Process:
