Division Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology - McGovern Medical School McGovern Medical School – UTHealth Houston

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at McGovern Medical School (MMS), UTHealth Houston, is seeking its next Chief to propel the division’s tripartite mission of excellence in clinical service, education training, and research development. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a community-focused clinical division in the world-renowned Texas Medical Center.

Under the leadership of renowned Professor and Chair, Mary Aitken, and in alignment with the Department of Pediatrics’ broader strategic plans, the incoming Chief will be responsible for creating and implementing the vision and goals for the division and leading and mentoring the division’s esteemed faculty and next generation of clinicians. Affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, the Division is comprised of ten gastroenterologists — eight academic staff and two full-time, clinic-based staff physicians — and six fellows who evaluate and treat a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders in our clinics, hospitals, and endoscopy laboratories. In a typical year, the Pedi GI Team completes more than 8,000 visits across 6 clinics and about 700 admissions across 4 hospitals. The Division has active programs in inflammatory bowel disease; specialized clinics in liver disease and children with high risk; an aerodigestive program; and a growing program on celiac and colorectal diseases.

The Pediatric Gastroenterology Division is currently #30 in the US News and World Report Top Children’s Hospitals ranked ahead of many more populated programs, and is expanding outreach clinics across the growing pediatric population in Greater Houston. There is strong institutional support to continue this growth and develop additional areas, including advanced endoscopy and motility programs.

The ideal candidate for the Chief position will be an Associate or full Professor with demonstrated experience and skill in leading academic programs and a commitment to excellence, discovery, and service along with a track record of achievement in their field of expertise. Expertise in managing a pediatric gastroenterology clinical practice will ideally support current division programs and department goals. Additional requirements include board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology, along with eligibility for Texas licensure and credentialing at affiliated medical institutions.
