The Downtown Sailing Center (DSC) is an award-winning, nonprofit 501(c)(3) community sailing center offering sailing instruction and access to sailing through a variety of programming to the greater Baltimore community since 1994. We are located in the heart of Baltimore at the Baltimore Museum of Industry, within easy walking distance from the Downtown, Federal Hill, South Baltimore, Riverside, and Locust Point neighborhoods.

The Downtown Sailing Center seeks a visionary and strategic Executive Director to lead the organization. This is an exciting time to lead one of the largest community sailing centers in the country!

This role requires a dynamic leader with a commitment to community engagement, high-quality educational programs, and the development of accessible waterfront recreation. As the Executive Director, you will work closely with the Board of Directors, current community stakeholders, City and State agencies, local nonprofits, and national philanthropic organizations to expand access to sailing, spearhead transformative capital projects, and establish the Downtown Sailing Center as an inclusive hub for maritime recreation and education.

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Excellence : Oversee daily operations, budget planning, safety protocols, and team leadership (full-time staff, seasonal staff, and volunteers). Ensure transparency, operational efficiency, community safety, and sustainable growth that supports the Sailing Center’s mission and values.

Fundraising & Resource Development : Lead efforts to secure funding through Maryland State grants, national philanthropy, and major private gifts, supporting infrastructure projects, program expansion, and community-focused initiatives.

Strategic Leadership : In collaboration with the Board, develop and execute a forward-looking vision for the Sailing Center, fostering a culture of inclusivity and excellence that resonates with Baltimore’s diverse communities.

Program Development & Community Engagement : Champion initiatives that promote youth engagement, environmental stewardship, inclusive sailing opportunities, and leadership skills. Re-imagine program offerings in partnership with the DSC community (including members, participants, and volunteers) that connect Baltimore’s communities to sailing and waterfront recreation.

Government & Community Partnerships : In collaboration with the Board, build and strengthen relationships with Baltimore City officials, Maryland State agencies, and local nonprofits to ensure program alignment with regional goals for waterfront access and recreational equity.

Capital Project Management : Oversee planning and execution of major capital projects, such as facility upgrades, dock expansions, and green infrastructure improvements, ensuring compliance with city and state guidelines and alignment with community needs.

Requirements:

Transformative Leadership: Proven experience leading recreational, cultural, or community organizations through periods of growth and structural change, with a focus on inclusive and high-impact programs.

Strong network with a demonstrated ability to foster partnerships that advance community goals.

Expertise in public/private partnerships and proven success in securing major private donations.

Preferred background in outdoor recreation or waterfront initiatives.

Ideally, have experience overseeing or managing capital projects that serve diverse communities.

Sailing experience not required.

Benefits:

Compensation & Benefits: The Downtown Sailing Center offers a competitive salary ($120,000-$150,000) and benefits package (403(B) with employer contributions, health insurance, flexible schedule). The starting amount will be commensurate based on experience.
