he Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Northern Region Design and Engineering Services is looking for a Technical Engineer / Architect 1 to help us

What you will be doing: Welcome to the role of Lead Review Engineer for the Northern Region Contracts Section! As the key Review Engineer, you'll manage the Review Unit, ensuring that State and Federally funded projects (including those with FHWA and FAA backing) meet top standards. Your day-to-day will involve conducting professional engineering peer reviews and scrutinizing plans, specifications, and contract documents with precision.

In this role, you'll be the expert in crafting and reviewing contract plans specifications and estimates (PS&E) packages, overseeing the preparation of bidding documents, and ensuring quality control. Coordination with Maintenance & Operations, design, construction, and planning teams will be crucial, as will providing technical, legal, and logistical support throughout the contract lifecycle.

You'll handle reviews for a wide range of projects-from aviation to highways-and ensure all documents are accurate and compliant. Additionally, you'll assist with innovative contracting formats and handle any necessary contracting waivers. Acting as the regional coordinator for compliance with other agencies and stepping in as needed for the Chief of Contracts, you'll play a vital role in driving the success and integrity of our projects.

This position works from our Peger Road offices centrally located in Fairbanks. The DOT&PF Northern Region team is made up of multi-disciplinary professionals who work closely together to accomplish the goal of completing transportation projects important to the State of Alaska. The office location provides abundant parking, a team-oriented atmosphere, and great break time walking with a coffee shop conveniently across the street. The work environment is highly collaborative where staff are encouraged to learn from others and share their knowledge within and across various project delivery disciplines.

The daily work entails working closely with a diverse range of teams within the DOT&PF structure-engineers, environmental staff, ROW experts, utilities, and planning professionals. Your day-to-day interactions span across internal divisions, and you'll frequently engage with the public, consultants, and other agencies to address project-related queries. Expect to be in continuous contact with municipal entities and contractors, ensuring seamless coordination and communication as you navigate the dynamic landscape of your assigned projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note: Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
