The candidate will support various new ship design and construction programs under the NOAA Fleet Recapitalization efforts. The primary focus of this position will be assisting program managers with day to day activities of ship acquisition. The duties include performing preliminary ship design studies; performing engineering analyses on ship’s structure; conducting trade-off studies; performing cost estimates of design changes; and contract validation. Additional duties include ship checks, specification development, drawing review/modification, acquisition document development, technical writing, and construction oversight. Other duties as assigned. Some travel will be required, principally to vendors, shipyard locations, and/or various NOAA locations. Overseas travel is a possibility.
Required Skills• Eight plus (8+) years of Naval Architectural experience in design of ships.• Ability to assess a vessel’s design to meet regulatory rules for stability and structural design.• Experience with AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, GHS, Rhino and other engineering related software.• Strong technical and specification review/writing experience• Ability to review/modify engineering drawings
Desired Skills• PE in Naval Architecture/Marine or other engineering disciplines.• Proficient in using the following design software: FEMAP, MAESTRO, SHCP, and ANSYS.• Maritime related program/acquisition management experience.• Experience with production techniques for steel construction ships.
• Experience with cost estimating.
