Marine Engineer

ECS is seeking a Marine Engineer to work in our Silver Spring, MD office.

Candidate shall have design integration experience with shipboard mechanical systems and become a valuable member of an engineering team developing procurement specifications for research ships. Duties to include providing technical evaluation of vendor proposed system designs; providing assessments on the maturity of the design; and determination of expected system performance to meet operational requirements. Periodically the candidate will be required to write technical papers on the technical risk of systems meeting design standards/guidance from USCG, ABS, IMO, etc. Additional duties may include drawing review/modification; shipboard material inspections; and development of ship alteration packages. Past performance would have given the candidate experience in designing or using most/all of the onboard piping systems (hydraulics, ships auxiliaries, HVAC, fuel distribution, water production, etc). Up to 20% travel will be required, principally to vendors and shipyard locations. Some travel will be overseas.
Required Skills• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the shipbuilding industry in the mechanical engineering discipline.• Shipboard experience as a Chief Engineer.• Ability to perform system design analysis and verification.• Experience supporting ship concept/preliminary design development; and performing feasibility studies.• Ability to review/modify drawings and have good technical writing skills.• Understanding of ABS, USCG and other regulatory agencies rules as they pertain to shipboard systems.
Desired Skills• PE in Naval Architecture/Marine or other engineering disciplines.• Experience with scientific/research (NOAA, UNOLS, Military Sealift Command, etc) ships.• Ability to lead design/technical specification development.• Experience with ship construction/repair oversight.• Experience with cost estimating.• Experience with ship systems testing and acceptance.• Ability to climb, walk, stand for extensive periods of time.
