POSITION SUMMARY :
The Co-Lab Studio Technician provides high quality support to the Duke academic community in Duke's Office of Information Technology makerspaces: The Co-Lab Studios. The Co-Lab (https://colab.duke.edu/) provides a welcoming, safe, and diverse environment, encourages creativity and experimentation, and empowers individuals to overcome challenges, learn new skills, and be inspired.
The Co-Lab Technician will help support users of the Co-Lab Studios in digital modeling, rapid prototyping and fabrication, machining, crafting, physical computing, as well as basic electronics. They perform routine maintenance, repairs, and preventive upkeep on all studio equipment, while ensuring compliance with the team's established policies and safety protocols. This lab is staffed primarily by student workers, and this position will assist with the training and oversight of these students. The Co-Lab Technician also assists with the support of other Co-Lab objectives such as training through conducting Roots program workshops and developing project-based learning initiatives. This position reports to the Manager of Co-Lab studios.

DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED:Provide customer service, support, and training to students, faculty, and staff at the Co-Lab Studio, including helping them use equipment, answering questions they might have about services, and referring them elsewhere when needed.Maintain and support digital fabrication equipment fleet including computers, 3D printers, CNC machines, waterjet cutters, sewing machines, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and small electronics. This includes hands-on work such as repairing and upgrading machines and electronics, as well as coordinating IT work such as resolving network and software problems.Ensure that the Co-Lab Studios are safe and coordinating with the Duke Occupational & Environmental Safety Office (OESO) for compliance.Develop and deliver training sessions on a variety of subjects for internal and external audiences, in live or asynchronous offerings.Propose and carry-out projects that serve as demonstrations of technology that can be used to demonstrate concepts and safety techniques, teach, or inspire.Perform day-to-day facilities management tasks such as cleaning equipment, surfaces, sweeping floors, and other functions that ensure the positive presentation of the space.Manage inventory of equipment, spare parts, and consumables as well as restocking and asset security.Assist with supervising the student staff and ensuring that they are meeting expectations.Create and update technical documentation related to operations, processes and equipment within the facility, including writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).Conduct facilities tours and other walk-throughs of the facility for usersDevelop and nurture an inclusive and diverse community of creators and makers at Duke.Remain flexible to support needs of the Co-Lab as they ariseEDUCATION
4-year degree or equivalent relevant experience preferredHigh School Diploma or equivalent requiredSKILLS and EXPERIENCERequired:
Experience providing customer service and working with a diverse array of individualsUnderstanding of fundamental technical equipment service and repair including preventative maintenance using hand and power tools, break-fix repairs, and routine operator-level practicesBasic understanding of how to work in a workshop, studio, or similar environment, including basic safety practices, equipment management, and organizationFamiliarity with software design/CAD tools such as Adobe Cloud, SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, Fusion360, Onshape, and/or other industry standard products.Knowledge of Windows and Mac OS platformsAbility to work independently and self-startMust have a valid driver's license and good driving historyMust be able to lift a minimum of 50 poundsMust be able to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, and twist at times when servicing machinesPreferred:
