Head of the Reference Section
in the
Serial and Government Publications Division (SER) , within the General and International Collections Directorate. The Serial and Government Publications Division is responsible for the acquisition, collection management, and reference servicing for a majority of the serial collections, including newspapers, government documents, comic books, and current periodicals. The Head of the Reference Section will manage reference operations to fulfill broad program objectives, policies, and projects.Supervisory and/or Managerial ResponsibilitiesProvides administrative and technical supervision relative to a group of employees performing work up to the GS-13 level.Has overall responsibility for administering, planning, implementing, and evaluating those activities that deal directly with the provision of high-quality reference service from the division's collections, including selected bound serial collections, government publications, newspaper collections, and other special collections in print, non-print, and various electronic formats, to the Library's many constituencies.Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Newspaper and Current Periodical Reading Room, which is open 6 days a week, including 4 evenings.Assures the provision of timely and accurate reference service to Congress and other Library patrons and facilitates the effective uses of these collections by researchers and other users.Serves as an expert in managing general reference and research methodology to effectively and efficiently provide information services to a diverse and demanding clientele, through all modes of communication.Directs the development of the Library's collections and activities of the division’s recommending officers.Works with reference librarians to plan and produce programs, exhibits, and seminars to bring attention to research developments and collections of interest to both researchers and the general public.May also be assigned to perform general administrative duties for the division and to serve in lieu of the chief as required.Application Process :Interested candidates should:Obtain permission from their supervisor.Submit a
