POSITION SUMMARY
The Idaho Director is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of work in the state that advances TU’s mission and achieves goals set forth in TU’s strategic plan. The Director leads an interdisciplinary staff to develop and implement integrated strategies to achieve conservation goals in TU’s Priority Waters, including habitat protection, reconnection and restoration outcomes, as well as strategies to obtain federal and state policies that advance TU’s mission.
The Director coordinates with other TU departments, TU’s Idaho Council and Chapters, and external partners to achieve program and organizational objectives. The Director is a member of the Pacific Region leadership team and reports to the Vice President of the Pacific Region. This position requires a high degree of collaboration, a people orientation and an ability to work with diverse stakeholders and decision-makers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Build and maintain a strong Idaho program team. Lead and manage the team by overseeing goal setting and work planning, obtaining staff training, conducting performance management, and creating an inclusive, supportive work environment.
In consultation with Pacific Region VP and program staff, set strategic direction and goals for Priority Waters in Idaho as well as supporting policy objectives.
Collaborate with staff in other TU departments (e.g., Government Affairs, Science, Finance and Administration, Development and Communications) to achieve program and organizational objectives. This includes coordinating with department leaders to set goals, establish workplans, provide performance feedback, and provide direction to staff assigned to the Idaho program.
Develop and manage the Idaho program budget.
Raise revenue to support the Idaho program. Collaborate with the Pacific VP and Development staff to raise funds from foundations, corporations and individual donors. Work with Idaho program staff to secure public funding. Ensure compliance with grant terms, including submission of timely reports.
Collaborate with TU’s Government Affairs department to achieve federal policy goals.
Establish and maintain productive relationships with policymakers, natural resource managers, Tribes, elected officials, economic stakeholders, and other conservation and sportfishing organizations to achieve program and organizational objectives.
Build and maintain strong relationships with TU’s Idaho grassroot leaders.
Guide staff in developing effective strategies to engage local communities, members, and supporters, and assist in growing and diversifying TU’s base of supporters.
Coordinate with TU’s communications staff to ensure TU’s value proposition and conservation work in Idaho is effectively communicated to target audiences, including funders and policymakers.
Assist the Pacific VP in developing and maintaining a strong, cohesive regional team through participation in Pacific region director calls and meetings.
Collaborate with program directors in adjacent states to develop and implement strategies for multi-state projects, such as water management in the upper Snake River Basin and Snake River salmon recovery.
Requirements:
Demonstrated success in building, leading, and managing interdisciplinary teams within the conservation field, particularly in a dispersed work environment; minimum of five years of team leadership experience.
Demonstrated high skill level and experience in the following domains:
Budget development and management
Staff management, including work planning and performance management
Fundraising
Written and oral communication
Strategy development and strategic planning
Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Understanding of and ability to communicate the ecological and biological needs of trout and salmon
Understanding of policy and management issues related to trout and salmon conservation.
Understanding of the political and cultural contexts in which TU’s conservation work is conducted in Idaho, to enable the informed selection of goals, strategies, and tactics.
Passion for the outdoors and Trout Unlimited’s mission.
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in a field related to conservation a plus.
Valid driver’s license; ability to travel frequently in Idaho and occasionally within the Pacific region and to Washington D.C.
