The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Student Affairs plays a critical role fostering a vibrant and inclusive community at Harvey Mudd College. This leadership position within the Division of Student Affairs (DSA) provides strategic direction, comprehensive assessment practices, oversight, and support for a range of offices that directly impact the student experience outside the classroom, including Academic Resources and Student Success, Campus Life, Career Services, Civic and Community Engagement, Housing and Residential Life, Institutional Diversity, Title IX, and Wellbeing. The AVP assists the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students with strategic planning, establishing priorities and identifying key goals that align with DSA’s and the College’s mission, priorities and strategic goals. The AVP is expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in the DSA, Academic Affairs, faculty and staff across campus, The Claremont Colleges Services (TCCS), and Student Affairs staff at the other Claremont Colleges.Duties and Responsibilities:Directly supervise, mentor, and provide feedback and operational direction to Associate Deans in Academic Resources and Student Success, Campus Life, Residential Life, Institutional Diversity, Wellbeing, Directors of Career Services, Civic and Community Engagement and Student Honor Board Chairs.Assist the Vice President with managing the DSA website, budget, staffing, and strategic planning.Assist the Vice President by providing reports, preparing analytical studies, and drafting, recommending and administering policies.Identify and implement new initiatives to enhance the student experience and foster student belonging, using assessment and data-informed strategies.Partner with faculty and staff across HMC to develop and implement co-curricular initiatives that promote student engagement, leadership development, and foster a sense of belonging.Attend campus events and activities on a regular basis and maintain a visible presence.Represent DSA on various HMC and TCCS committees and task forces.Serve on the student Care Team. Help develop crisis response protocols to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students during emergencies.Manage and lead all related student handbook and policy updates annually.Serve as a Deputy Title IX Coordinator.Prepare, publish and distribute the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.Awareness of campus climate issues and commitment to effectively address these issues in an open, collaborative manner.Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and act as a deputy in their absence.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire staff.Credible, engaging, supportive, transparent, and approachable supervisor with knowledge of the responsibilities of each staff member’s position, respect for their work and contributions, and adept at advocating for staff and students.Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.Ability to develop and manage budgets effectively.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Experience in program assessment and data-driven decision making.Highly energetic individual with a strong sense of self and ability to appropriately infuse joy and enthusiasm into the workplace and campus community.Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.Strong crisis management skills and demonstrated experience successfully working through crisis situations.Solid understanding of student activism, protests, demonstrations, and the First Amendment.Knowledge of current trends and issues in higher education, particularly related to student affairs.Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students.Understanding and appreciation of how academic and student affairs intersect to provide a holistic experience for students.Ability to educate students about their social and ethical responsibilities.Knowledge of and a demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate college policy and laws, rules, and regulations governing student matters especially Americans with Disability Act (ADA), Title IX, the Clery Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.Commitment to using best practices, technology, and innovation to continually provide students with cutting-edge programs and services.Required Qualifications:Education:

Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling or a related field is a requirement for this position.Experience:

Minimum of five years of direct experience in student affairs or a related area, with progressive responsibility. Previous supervisory experience required. Demonstrated commitment to student success and wellbeing.Licenses/Certifications:

Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.Preferred Qualifications:

Preference for experience at a residential liberal arts college.Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit; stand, use hands and fingers and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The regular hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Hours may vary due to the needs of the division, College or student programs that require work on evenings and weekends.Classification:

This is a full-time, exempt, and benefits-eligible position.Salary:

The anticipated starting salary is

$150,000 - $155,000

annually. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.Reporting:
