Executive Director of Clinical Applications . We are seeking a visionary leader with a passion for driving excellence in clinical IT applications to spearhead the management and improvement of our IT clinical applications portfolio. This pivotal role involves overseeing a comprehensive range of systems, including inpatient, outpatient, ancillary clinical, revenue cycle, population health and care management applications, as well as managing Epic Connect and software development initiatives. As a key member of our senior IT leadership team, you will shape the future of our clinical applications, ensuring we deliver top-tier services and innovative solutions to enhance patient care and organizational efficiency.
In this high-impact role, the
Executive Director (ED), Clinical Applications
will lead a diverse team comprised of Epic Training, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Engineering, and Clinical Communications professionals. Your leadership will drive the establishment of departmental objectives, communication of application standards, and identification of new vendors and resources. With a focus on building strong client relationships and fostering effective communication, you will play a crucial role in maintaining our IT department’s reputation for excellence and innovation.
Who You Are
Master’s degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in computer science, business or healthcare administration.
Twelve or more years of hands-on and management experience in technology operations and infrastructure management with eight or more years in a senior healthcare IT operational or program management position.
Technical and/or implementation experience with Epic inpatient, outpatient, population health, imaging, access & revenue cycle modules.
Demonstrated success in managing large teams of full-time employees, consultants, and contractors. Strong track record in implementing and maintaining large-scale Epic systems.
Expertise in structured systems lifecycle development and project management. Proficiency in budgeting and planning for large departments and projects. Strong analytical, time management, and leadership skills with the ability to handle complex projects and issues effectively.
Strong preference given to those with Epic application certifications (e.g., EpicCare Ambulatory and Inpatient, Beaker, Resolute) and certifications in industry standards such as Project Management Professional (PMP), ITIL, or CHCIO.

What You’ll Do
Strategic Oversight:
Develop and implement short and long-term goals related to IT applications and services, ensuring alignment with UChicago Medicine’s strategic direction.
Application Management:
Oversee all application services and systems, exceeding service level agreements. Establish and communicate application standards and architecture.
Team Leadership:
Manage and mentor a diverse team, including trainers and clinical informaticists, ensuring high-quality education and support for all EMR users.
Vendor and Budget Management:
Supervise third-party vendors and manage a significant annual budget. Provide regular reports to management on project performance, metrics, and application systems.
Communication and Collaboration:
Facilitate effective communication between staff, vendors, and other technology resources. Represent IT in committees and forums, reporting on critical issues to the CIO.
Continuous Improvement:
Stay current with industry trends and innovations, integrating them into our strategic plans. Contribute to clinical delivery and process improvement programs.
