POSITION DESCRIPTION
This is an internal recruitment for candidates from the University Writing Program at the University of California, Davis.
The UC Davis Writing Center (WC) functions as a unit within the Office of Undergraduate Education in the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost, serving all of the UC Davis community. The primary responsibility of the director of teaching is to provide operational oversight of writing center course instruction. The director will report to the Associate Vice Provost (AVP), the Writing Center. The WC is a new unit and is integral to campus planning and programming efforts to improve success and achieve equitable outcomes for all students, both graduate and undergraduate.
The Writing Center (WC) offers courses that instruct students in writing in a variety of contexts. Courses are taught by lecturers with advanced professional training in teaching writing and by PhD students. Courses are offered at all levels, including entry-level writing, lower and upper university composition requirements.
In consultation with the AVP, the director bears the following responsibilities:
I. ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT OF PROGRAMS (85% EFFORT)
Oversight of the teaching and program-support work of all lecturers. This work may include classroom visits and meetings with all faculty and review of their syllabi, course materials, evaluations, and students’ work; close mentorship of newer faculty; oversight of lecturers’ reviews, including the drafting of a recommendation to the AVP for merit increase, as appropriate.
In accordance with Senate regulations and in collaboration with the AVP, maintains the curricular strength of WC courses.
Works closely with the WC director (who coordinates consulting) to ensure alignment across WC operations as a whole.
In coordination with WC staff, meets with faculty and/or students to resolve issues related to concerns such as classroom performance, grades, etc.
In coordination with WC staff and the AVP, and in alignment with UC-AFT collective bargaining agreement, develops and maintains a schedule of courses each year that meets curricular needs and student demands, and that provides each lecturer with an equitable workload. This work continues throughout the year, and might entail cancelling underenrolled sections and redirecting students, adding or changing sections and advising on short-notice lecturer recruitment, or changing teaching assignments of existing lecturers at short notice.
In collaboration with WC staff and the AVP, represents and advocates for the WC’s projects, services, and interests to various audiences: campus community, UC Systemwide, and the broader writing community.
Other duties as assigned, particularly in relation to university-wide writing or composition requirements, assessment review or placement.
Teaching 1 to 2 WC courses per year will be expected of this position. During the quarter(s) WC courses are taught, the academic administrator position FTE will be reduced to accommodate the appropriate lecturer appointment (based on the candidate's qualifications) appointment to teach the WC courses.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10 % EFFORT)
Continued professional growth and the ability to relate effectively with academic personnel in the WC and other campus units. Provide intellectual leadership and engagement with current scholarship in Writing Studies and/or Rhetoric and Composition. Participate in appropriate professional societies and conferences as appropriate. Give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups as appropriate.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
Participate in the administration of the WC and the University through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation. Participate in campus governance through committee membership, community activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications

Academic appointment within the University Writing Program at UC Davis
Terminal degree in Writing Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, Education, English, or related field
Additional qualifications

Exemplary record in teaching writing
Leadership, management or administrative experience
Experience training and mentoring faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in writing instruction
Program evaluation and assessment
Interest in, understanding of, and commitment to enhancing diversity by serving groups that are underrepresented in the academy
Knowledge of current scholarship and best practices in Writing Studies
Experience teaching one or more of the following: developmental writing, basic writing, developmental reading.
Preferred qualifications

Experience teaching hybrid and online courses.
Contributing to curriculum and faculty development projects.
