Tax Executives Institute (TEI) seeks a dynamic and self-motivated professional with at least ten years of membership and chapter experience. The Director of Membership & Chapter Engagement plays an integral strategic and leadership role within the organization and ensures a meaningful and valuable experience for our more than 6,200 in-house tax professional members.Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Membership & Chapter Engagement will oversee TEI’s membership recruitment, retention, and engagement efforts and support our 56 chapters worldwide. Responsibilities include managing our Membership and Chapter Engagement Manager and Member & Chapter Services Coordinator and overseeing the Membership Team’s operations, communications, and programming functions. The Director of Membership & Chapter Engagement will use data and trends to leverage and grow TEI's membership, collaborating closely with TEI’s IT, Marketing, Events, Legal, Sponsorship, and Governance teams.BACKGROUNDTEI was founded in 1944 by 15 corporate tax executives in New York City and is dedicated to improving the tax system in a principled, effective manner. Since its founding, TEI has grown into a global organization of over 6,200 in-house tax professional members representing over 3,000 leading businesses in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. We offer a flexible and collegial work environment where our staff can be innovative and proactive while collaborating with other team members.POSITION DESCRIPTIONThe Director of Membership & Chapter Engagement oversees our Membership & Chapter operations and team. Primary responsibilities include identifying opportunities to increase membership and retention, ensuring a rewarding experience for our members throughout the membership lifecycle, and supporting TEI’s chapters in their recruitment, retention, and operational efforts.Specific responsibilities include:ManagementContribute to the Institute’s strategic planning and organizational leadership initiatives.Be a highly motivated, self-starting individual with a proven ability to manage, lead, and collaborate with internal and external teams.Directly supervise and empower our Member and Chapter Services Coordinator, who has primary responsibility for the Institute’s membership application, reinstatement, and approval processes, and our Member & Chapter Engagement Manager, who has primary responsibility for ensuring TEI members access the value and benefits of TEI membership.Prepare and manage budgets for TEI’s membership and chapter relations initiatives, and monitor the variance between budget, expenses, and revenues.Possess robust operational and project management skills.MembershipServe as the staff liaison to the Membership Committee.Make strategic recommendations for ensuring member value and satisfaction with TEI services and products.Analyze member data to provide insights on retention strategies.Develop and implement data-driven membership growth and retention strategies.Review and make recommendations regarding member dues structure and offerings.Assess and collaborate with internal and external teams regarding member benefits, ensuring value at each stage of the career path.Deliver monthly membership reports.Initiate and manage the annual renewal process.Chapter RelationsCultivate relationships and trust between the Institute and its 56 chapters.Conduct regular check-ins with chapter leaders to identify needs and provide support.Coordinate and lead chapter leader training sessions.Provide chapters with timely membership information and Institute news.Support chapter operations and succession planning by understanding the challenges, needs, and wants of TEI’s chapters.Develop and share best practices and toolkits for chapter management and operations.Support the chapters’ development of continuing education content and speakers at chapter meetings in coordination with the Director of Sponsor Relations.Update, maintain, and improve TEI’s Manual of Organization & Operation.OnlineIn coordination with the IT & Web Services Department, ensure the efficiency of member processes and data integrity for TEI’s association management system.In partnership with the Membership & Chapter Engagement Manager, oversee the strategic development and improvement of TEI’s online community and chapter management platforms, and manage, promote, and train users on those platforms.Marketing, Communication & EventsWork with Marketing & Communications to develop a strategic marketing plan highlighting the benefits of TEI membership, opportunities for engagement, and professional development.Attend TEI conferences, seminars, courses, and chapter meetings, as well as external conferences, to promote membership and obtain feedback from chapters and members.CANDIDATE PROFILEWe seek candidates with strong operational and strategic management abilities who thrive on working collaboratively with a small team. Required skills and abilities include:Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience) with 10+ years of membership and chapter relations experience.Managerial experience required.Association or not-for-profit experience required.CAE preferred.Experience with Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, Association Management Systems (TEI utilizes netFORUM), email marketing tools, and web content management systems (TEI’s site is hosted in Drupal).TRAVELCandidate must be able to travel to 4-6 events per year.COMPENSATION AND BENEFITSBase compensation is commensurate with experience.Benefits: Health, Life, and Dental Insurance; 401(k) including employer match up to 6% of salary; generous paid time off.Annual performance-based bonus and salary increase.Hybrid work arrangement requiring two days/week in the office.To apply, please provide a copy of your resume and salary requirements to Pilar Mata, Executive Director, at pmata@tei.org.
