Position Overview
Philadelphia magazine, one of America's most honored and respected city magazines, is seeking an Editor to lead the organization's editorial staff and all content in print, digital, social media, and events. The ideal candidate has an outstanding ability to lead a staff of talented journalists, generate story ideas, knows how to edit polished copy that leaps off the page and screen, and has a playful sense of humor that translates to headline writing and story ideas. As the leader of the editorial team, the Editor directly supervises editorial operations to support the editorial mission. This person leads and manages the conception, planning, presentation, and execution of content on all platforms and must be a strategic thinker and organized manager with insights into the future of city magazines and how our unique offerings fit into the evolving media landscape. In addition, this candidate should have a passion for Philly-or at least the willingness to learn every nook and cranny of this world-class city. We're looking for a self-starter who has a strong voice, proven leadership and communication skills, and smart opinions about life in Philadelphia. This is a chance to work in and drive the conversation in one of the most exciting towns in America.
Qualifications
Must have at least 7 years of experience at a lifestyle magazine or equivalent publication. Impeccable story judgment and outstanding editing skills. Ability to collaborate across the edit team with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead others. Ability to delegate, assign, set objectives, provide positive feedback, and take corrective action, if necessary. Ability to lead large complex projects, work in a fast-paced environment, and handle multiple and changing priorities simultaneously. Attentional-to-detail, scheduling, and strong organizational skills. Ability to self-motivate and work with minimal supervision. Ability and/or experience interfacing with advertisers and readers at events throughout the year and serving as a day-to-day ambassador for the brand. Experience with WordPress and Adobe Creative Suite An admirable work ethic, proven time management skills, and an obsession with producing top-quality work Team-playerness (non-negotiable) Sense of humor (also non-negotiable) Responsibilities/Duties
Sets Philly's editorial agenda, both short- and long-term. Leads editorial planning and discussions to set direction and tone of content. Serves as the chief communication voice for the edit team, ensuring that all staff are kept in the loop on both daily issues and longer-term strategic matters. Supervises the editorial team. Top-edits features in the monthly magazine, manages editors, recruits new writers and freelancers, and oversees newsletters plus the day-to-day operation of the editorial team in all of its functions and duties. Works with Publisher, ensuring effective communication and collaboration. Responsible for meeting content deadlines to support sales initiatives and drive overall business success.
