Job Summary:The Transportation Director will oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of the district's transportation services. This includes managing daily transportation operations, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws, maintaining fleet operations, and providing a safe and efficient transportation system that supports both curricular and extracurricular activities. The role also involves managing personnel, handling budgets, engaging with school administration, staff, and the community, and assisting with hands-on mechanical tasks as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage daily student transportation services, including routing, scheduling, and fleet maintenance.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and district transportation regulations.

Supervise and evaluate all transportation personnel, including hiring, training, and disciplinary actions.

Handle communication with parents, school staff, and administration regarding transportation issues, including discipline problems and special transportation requests.

Develop and oversee the department's budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility in the allocation of resources.

Implement safety programs and monitor compliance with safety standards, including the use of bus cameras and driver inspections.

Assist in weather-related school closing decisions, road monitoring, and emergency situations.

Act as a substitute driver in emergencies and ensure appropriate driver coverage for school trips and extracurricular activities.

Participate in planning processes related to the district's transportation needs, including future equipment and personnel requirements.

Assist with mechanical and maintenance tasks, including routine and major vehicle repairs, and ensure that all district-owned equipment undergoes preventive maintenance.

Oversee the training program for bus drivers, ensuring that all drivers complete the required annual 3-hour training class and follow all district transportation rules.

Provide transportation services for special education students, ensuring that all transportation accommodations meet the needs of students with physical limitations and comply with federal requirements.

Ensure all transportation personnel follow district guidelines for daily vehicle inspections, including driver checklists and bus cleanliness.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED required; a bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field is preferred (experience may be substituted).

Minimum three years of experience in transportation, fleet management, or business administration.

Valid Iowa CDL with bus driver's permit and airbrake endorsement.

Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations, vehicle maintenance, and automated routing software.

Mechanical skills and experience with electrical systems, vehicle repair, and maintenance are strongly preferred.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work under various environmental conditions.

Ability to manage multiple tasks, resolve conflicts, and promote a positive working environment.

Proficient in budgeting, data analysis, and the use of transportation software.

Problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with all district stakeholders.

Ability to effectively train transportation staff, particularly bus drivers, and implement ongoing safety programs.

Working Conditions:

The position involves both office work and physical tasks, such as inspecting vehicles, assisting with mechanical repairs, and interacting with transportation staff.

The director must be available for on-call emergencies and be prepared to work in varying weather conditions.

Exposure to road dust, fuel fumes, and outdoor temperatures is part of the work environment.

The position requires physical agility, including the ability to handle long periods of sitting and exposure to road vibration during bus inspections and ride-alongs.
